# Advanced Services ## Ultrasonic * **Contraindications:** Heart conditions, pacemakers, pregnancy, and diabetes. * Can be used as a gentle hydrating and exfoliating treatment, particularly for pre-surgical treatments. * The devices utilize sound waves to create change in the skin. * **3 step treatment:** * Cavitation - cleaning steps which creates the implosion of a water molecule * Sonophoresis - used to penetrate serums and moisturizers * Microcurrent - used to create homeostasis ## Microdermabrasion * **Contraindications:** Rosacea, bacterial/viral/fungal infections, open lesions, dermatitis, active acne, use of Accutane within 1 year, immediate post-operative. * Machines can be used in crystal or diamond forms. Most machines use a spray and vacuum function. Crystal machines can use: * Aluminum oxide (corundum) * Salt * Baking Soda (sodium bicarbonate) * **Aggressiveness of the treatment can vary based on strength of crystals, speed of the handpiece, and number of passes.** A treatment that was too aggressive can result in pin point bleeding. Settings should be charted at the end of a service. Some machines claim to remove up to 25% of the stratum corneum. Services should stop before the appearance of erythema. * Microdermabrasion should not be used post-laser resurfacing until the physician gives approval. ## Chemical Peels * **Contraindications:** Use of retinoids, herpes simplex, open lesions, pregnancy, heart conditions, eczema, lupus, rosacea, psoriasis, infections, extremely thin or sensitive skin, sunburn. * **Typical concentrations of acids used in the salon are between 15-30%.** Medical peels normally have higher % and lower pH. Estheticians should not use peels containing phenol. * AHA & BHA are the most common ingredients found in chemical exfoliants. * **Salicylic acid should not be used on clients who are pregnant, as it is potentially systemic.** * **Jessner solutions:** * Salicylic Acid * Lactic Acid * Resorcinol * Ethanol Base * Acetone may be used before a Jessner as a degreaser.
