CHEMICAL LEAKS OR SPILLS INSIDE A BUILDING 1. The Haz Mat Team is dispatched along with either a Class 2 or Class 3 building assignment (based on the size of the building) for reported major chemical leaks or spills inside buildings. If a minor leak is reported or an investigation is indicated by information received, the nearest Pumper Company will investigate the incident and determine if additional assistance is needed to control the situation. 2. An Officer and not more than two Fire Fighters should enter the building in full Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), which shall include bunker gear, firefighting helmet and hood and Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA). Vaseline may be required for exposed areas of the skin. 3. Determination of type of chemical involved should be made as soon as possible, so proper precautions can be taken. 4. If chemical is determined to be dangerous, immediate safety measures must be taken to protect citizens and Emergency Response Division (ERD) personnel. 5. No attempt should be made to shut off any irritant gas unless proper precautions for personnel involved have been taken. If necessary, await arrival of qualified assistance. NOTE: All Miami Fire-Rescue smoke ejectors should be considered NON EXPLOSION PROOF and should NOT be used in areas that contain flammable vapors. Also all Miami Fire-Rescue radios are to be considered NON EXPLOSION PROOF. Edited: 1/13/09
