Therefore, there are many definitions of health offered from time to time but most of them were criticized for one or more reasons. Some of the commonly referred definitions are as follows: * Health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. -WHO, 1947 * Health is the condition of being sound body, mind, or spirit, especially freedom from physical disease or pain. -Webster's Dictionary * Health is soundness of body or mind; that condition in which its functions are duly and efficiently discharged. -Oxford English Dictionary WHO defines health as a "state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity" (1947, 2017). Every person has a different definition of health (Pender et al., 2011). A person who is free from disease is not necessarily healthy (Pender, 1996). Health is a state of being influenced by a person's values, personality, and lifestyle. For many people, health is defined by the circumstances surrounding their life rather than their physical condition (Pender et al., 2011). Nurses individualize nursing care by considering the whole person and the environment to help patients reach their health goals. Individual perceptions of health are affected by a person's health beliefs and change as a person ages. For example, the definition of health for older people is often affected by the ability to function independently, the presence of or management of symptoms, acceptance of current health status, being connected to others, and having energy (Song and Kong, 2015). ## Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs Maslow's hierarchy of needs, also known as "basic human needs model," explains an individual's motivation behind behaviors, and their reason for them. Maslow's original, a hierarchical pyramid according to Maslow, indicates that people meet the needs of one level before they are able to move to the next level. Unmet needs may cause pain and frustrations for an individual to satisfy. * **First**, a person needs to satisfy basic physiological needs, such as oxygen. Once these needs are met, an individual can progress to higher needs, such as safety and security. * **The second level** addresses needs for safety and security, which includes but is not limited to the need for stability and comfort, order and law, freedom from fear and chaos. For example, a woman in a war-torn country might prioritize safety and security over other needs.
