## Parenteral Administration ### Needle - Parts - Hub: part of the needle that connects to the syringe - Shaft: length of the needle; inserted into the body - Point: sharpened end of the shaft - Lumen: inside opening of the shaft - Bevel: slant of the point - Measured by - Gauge: size of the lumen - The smaller the gauge, the larger the needle - 13G to 27G - Length - Varies according to use - ½ inch to 6 inches ### Administration - Intradermal (ID) (Figs. 22.4 and 22.5) - Needle and syringe size - Syringes: TB (1 cc) - Needle gauge: 26G to 27G - Needle length: 3½ inch to ½ inch - Sites - Anterior forearm - Middle back - Upper chest - Uses of route - Allergy skin testing (includes skin prick or scratch test) - TB skin testing medication (Mantoux/purified protein derivative [PPD]) - Injection angle: 10 to 15 degrees (with bevel facing up) - Goal of injection: formation of a wheal or bleb - Amount given: 0.01 to 0.2 cc - Intramuscular (IM) (Figs. 22.6 and 22.7) - The injection is administered just under the epidermis.
