Identify the elements of design. 2. Determine the principles of design. 3. Appreciate the importance of elements and principles of design. II. What You Need to Know? The Elements of Design 1. Line- A line is a visual or recognizable path created by a point in a space. It is one dimensional and can vary in length, thickness or width, direction, curvature and color. 2. Shape- Shape is an area enclosed by one or more lines. It can also be produced by colors and textures. Shapes are two-dimensional, and they can be geometric (square, circle, oval, triangle and others. Organic (all other shapes) 3. Texture- It refers to the feel, appearance, thickness, or stickiness of an actual surface. 4. Color- It is a particular wavelength of light seen by the eye when an object reflects or emits light. 5. Space- It is the area between, around, or within images. The Principles of Design 1. Balance a. Symmetric -Symmetric is characterized by equal visual weight distribution on both sides. b. Asymmetric -Asymmetric is defined by imbalance visual weight. c. Radial -Radial has elements that are arranged in a circular form from a central point. 2. Proportion refers to the relative size of parts within a whole. 3. Scale refers to the size of one object in relation to another. 4. Emphasis- Emphasis is when an element of an image is the focus of the viewer’s attention. 5. An artwork has unity if the elements used deliver the statement intended by the artist. 6. An artwork is in harmony if the elements used complement with one another. 7. When elements of an artwork come together to create a visually appealing composition with unity and harmony, there is a variety. III.
