Basic Human Needs Dr. Manal Mohamed Mostafa Prof. of Medical Surgical Nursing Basic Human Needs Needs Theories In needs theories, human needs are ranked on an ascending scale according to how essential the needs are for survival (Abraham Maslow, 1970). Basic Human Needs Needs Theories Maslow's hierarchy of needs is a model for understanding the motivations for human behavior. These include physiological needs, safety, love and belonging, esteem, and self-actualization. Basic Human Needs The main idea behind Maslow's hierarchy of needs: Maslow's hierarchy of needs is a theory of psychology explaining human motivation based on the pursuit( )متابعةof different levels of needs. The theory states that humans are motivated to fulfill their needs in a hierarchical order. This order begins with the most basic needs before moving on to more advanced needs. Human Needs There are five levels in this hierarchy ❑ The basic physiological needs must be met to maintain life. ❑The rest of the needs are related to quality of life. ❑ They are safety and security, love and belonging, self-esteem, and self-actualization. The needs of the lower levels must be met before a person is motivated to meet the needs of the next higher level. Human Needs Many programs use Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs as a basic for planning the care of clients. This ensures that basic physiological needs as well as the other needs are assessed and addressed in individualized care plans. Human beings have certain basic needs. We must have food, water, air, and shelter to survive. If any one of these basic needs is not met, then humans cannot survive Human Needs There are five levels in Maslow's pyramid. The bottom two levels are physiological needs and safety needs which, together, make up basic needs. Next are love and belonging and esteem needs referred to as psychological needs. Self- actualization needs are at the top level of Maslow's pyramid. Human Needs Physiological needs ▪ Although Maslow did not specifically identify the physiological needs, they are generally accepted to be the needs of oxygen, water, food, elimination, rest (sleep), activity (exercise), shelter. Human Needs Safety and Security Needs The next level, safety, encompasses the needs for shelter (مأوى.), stability ()استقرار, security ()حماية, physical safety, and freedom from undue anxiety ()قلق ال مبرر له. Safety needs include both physical and emotional aspects. Illness is often a threat to safety because the stability of life is disrupted. Human Needs Love and Belonging Needs Love and belonging, incorporates not only giving but also receiving affection. Having friends and participating with others in groups and organizations are two ways to meet these needs. Meeting these needs is extremely important for mental health. Human Needs Self-Esteem Needs The needs of the self-esteem level are met by achieving success in work and other activities. Recognition ( )تقديرfrom others increases self-esteem and feelings of pride( )فخرin one’s accomplishments ()اإلنجازات. Human Needs Self-Actualization Needs Self-actualization is the highest level of the Maslow hierarchy. A person who has met these needs is confident ()واثق, self-fulfilled ( )ذاتيا محققة, and creative ( ;)مبدعlooks for challenges(;)التحديات and sees beauty and order in the world. Human Needs Most people are so busy meeting the physiological and safety and security needs, little time or energy is left to meet the love and belonging, self-esteem, and self-actualization needs: thus, most people are less than satisfied at higher levels of the hierarchy. Even when the lower two levels are met with- out much trouble, many people have personalities and attitudes that make meeting the needs of the three higher levels difficult, if not impossible. Human Needs Providing quality care ◼ The first step in providing quality client care is to be aware of yourself. ◼ What kind of personality do you have? ◼ Is your self-concept positive, or do you have self-doubts and lack self-confidence? ◼ What are your beliefs and attitudes? ◼ Knowing the answers to such questions will help you in your role as caregiver. Human Needs ◼ The next step is taking care of your own needs ◼ When you attend to the needs in your own life, you are then free to concentrate on caring for others. ◼ Your example of self-care inspires ()يلهم clients to have confidence that you will provide quality care. ◼ Thus, self-care is a factor in your effectiveness as a caregiver.
