HSP3U1: Anthropology Notes Anthropology: An Introduction The study of humans in the past and present and interactions with the physical and social environments Areas of Anthropology Physical/Biological Anthropology Study of the origins, evolution, and diversity of people Studying bones can provide anthropologists with important clues about people Morphology determines age, pelvic bones reveal gender, traces on bones reveal possible diseases, etc. Ethnography/Ethnology The study of people from around the world through field work and participation observation Challenges: building trust, cultural differences, recording data, remaining respectful and considerate Social/Cultural Anthropology The study of culture and societies from around the world Similarities between cultures: social organizations, language, customs/traditions, art and literature, religion, form of government, economic system Archeology The study of human societies through what past societies have left as remains Challenges: land destruction, prohibition of entry Paleoanthropology The study of humans and primate evolution through fossilized remains Dinosaurs are vertebrates like mammals, meaning paleoanthropologists can study the evolutionary history of mammals which eventually evolved into humans Primatology The study of gorillas, chimps, monkeys, and lemurs Primates share a number of physical characteristics with humans, so understanding them can help us understand humans Forensic Anthropology Study of human remains by applying anthropological expertise Helps view the stories of the dead to solve crime, though is difficult to work with to its challenges within gathering evidence
