**History of 7-Eleven ** In 1927, John Jefferson Green, an employee of Southland Ice Company began selling eggs, milk and bread in front of his store in Dallas Texas. This reduced the need for customers to travel long distances for basic needs, the convenience store model was born. It was such a success that the plant's manager, Joe C. Thompson Jr. eventually bought the Southland Ice Company and turned it into the Southland Corporation. In 1946, he changed the store's name to 7-Eleven to reflect our extended operating hours. The First 24-Hour Store Opened in Austin in 1962. In 1999, Southland Corporation officially changed its corporate name to 7-Eleven, now the undisputed leader in convenience retailing, with more than 56,000 stores operating worldwide in 18 countries, with total sales of more than \$36 billion in 2003.
