HELE 4 Cycle: 11 Session: 1-2 Handout #: 1 Third Quarter School Year: 2024-2025 Topic/s: Recycling I. Learning Targets At the end of the lesson, students should be able to: 1. explain the importance of recycling; 2. show enthusiasm and responsibility in creating a project that can be sold or reused; 3. create a project plan; and 4. create a project using recyclable materials. II. What You Need To Know One of the most pressing problems we face globally is the improper disposal of waste. This leads to other issues such as pollution, flooding, the spread of diseases, threats to marine life, and many others, making life unsafe, scarce, and uncomfortable for everyone. Recycling is a way of processing materials that are no longer needed and would otherwise be thrown away as waste to create or produce new products. Benefits of Recycling Why should we recycle? What are the benefits of recycling waste materials? 1. Recycling helps protect the environment. 2. Recycling creates job opportunities and generates income. 3. Recycling reduces greenhouse gas emissions from factories, which contribute to climate change. 4. Recycling conserves energy. 5. Recycling aids in fuel production. 6. Recycling improves soil quality. 7. Recycling minimizes the need to collect new raw materials. Identifying Recyclable Products/Waste Materials One of the largest categories of wasted products includes containers and packaging. Almost every product (food or non-food) sold comes in some form of container or package. These can be made from plastic, glass, metal, paper, foil, aluminum, vinyl, polystyrene, fabric, or combinations of these materials. Thin plastics are commonly used in packaging in marketplaces, but because plastics are non-biodegradable, many local ordinances now prohibit their use. By identifying recyclable materials, we can think of creative projects that allow us to reuse the following: Types of Waste That Can Be Recycled Construction and Demolition Waste Examples: Concrete, wood, metal, plastic, glass, doors, windows Municipal Solid Waste Commonly referred to as household and commercial waste Other Types of Waste Miscellaneous waste found at home that can be turned into useful or decorative items. Examples: Used notebooks Empty wine bottles Empty plastic bottles Unused plastic buckets, ice cream containers, and similar items. Planning a Project for Recycling Careful and systematic planning is the first step in starting a recycling project. Plan what to recycle, the materials you need, and how to go about the project. The following are some guidelines to consider in planning a project: Study the project, make a detailed illustration of the designs and then choose one. Once you have chosen the design, list the materials needed. Choose the materials most suitable for the project. Plan the steps to be followed in making the project. Prepare the materials needed. When about to work on a project, it is well to prepare a project plan to guide you properly in working the project in a systematic and orderly manner. Parts of a Project Plan I. Name of Project – The name of the project to be created. II. Objectives – This states the reasons behind the project. III. Tools and Materials – A list of the tools needed for the project. IV. Design or drawing of the project – An illustration of the project to be done. V. Procedure – Steps in making the project. Sample Outline of Project Plan for a Recycling Project VI. Activity Create a simple project plan for recycling by following the correct format. References/Sources Anastacio, Luzviminda G. et al. 2002.
