# **Philippine Traditional Arts** ## **Bahay Kubo** * Or nipa hut * Most common form of housing among the native Filipinos. * It is characterized by the use of simple materials. ## **Hagabi** * A wooden chair of Ifugao, which symbolizes his status as a citizen in their community (kadanayagan). * The original design is called "Ginulding-Gulding" and present design is called "Ngiwi". ## **Singkil** * Is a popular dance showcasing the story of a prince and a princess in the forest. * Bamboo exploits every position of these clashing poles. ## **Islamic Art** * Typically, though not entirely, Islamic art has focused on the depiction of patterns and Arabic calligraphy, rather than human or animal figures, because it is believed by many Muslims that the depiction of the human form is idolatry and thereby a sin against God that is forbidden in the Qur'an. ## **Taka (Laguna)** * Taka refers to papier-mâché made using carved wooden sculpture used as a mold. * The craft originated in the town of Paete, Laguna in the Philippines. ## **Sarimanok** * Most well-known design. * The figure represents a fowl with wings, feathered tail and a head decorated with ornaments of scrolled and painted motif of leaves, spirals and feather-like forms. * It usually stands on a fish, and other one hangs from its beak. ## **Abaca (Catanduanes)** * Initially used as material for rope, and transformed into a wide variety of efficient products. * The versatility, durability and availability of abaca, or Manila hemp, makes it easy to work with or create different designs. ## **Puni or Palm Leaf Folding (Bulacan)** * Was intended to create artful toys for kids. However Puni can also be used to create woven baskets, bags, and even fans. * The most common Puni art is the "Palaspas". ## **Singkaban or Bamboo Art** * Proved that it's a versatile must-have that designers and homeowners should consider. * Aside from being used in different pieces of furniture and house parts, bamboo is also made into musical instruments, and creative decors.
