Each region has its prevailing beliefs, traditions, and feelings which make Asian literature rich in thousands of stories and poetry about its heritage. Wolf Totem by Jiang Rong **Some of the Popular Writers in Asia:** **Miguel Augusto Gabriel Jalbuena Syjuco** He is a Filipino writer from Manila and the grand prize winner of the 2008 Man Asian Literary Prize for his first novel Ilustrado. **Cyrus Mistry** He is an Indian author and playwright. He won the 2014 DSC Prize for South Asian Literature for Chronicle of a Corpse Bearer. He is the brother of author Rohinton Mistry. Mistry is from Mumbai. He began writing at a young age as a playwright, but has also worked as a journalist and short-story writer.  **Saju Abraham** is a lecturer in English at Sohar University, Oman. He was born in India and became a missionary at the age of 15. It was during the time that he developed his poetry-writing skills. He left the missionary and eventually left India to work under the Ministry of Education in Oman. **Aravind Adiga** An Indian writer and journalist. His debut novel, The White Tiger, won the 2008 Man Booker Prize. **Benny Daniel** Better known by his pen name Benyamin, is an Indian writer in Malayalam from Kerala. He is the author of about thirty books in various genres -- from short stories to novels and memoirs. **Bi Feiyu** He is a Chinese writer. His works are known for their complex portrayal of the \"female psyche.\" He has won some of the highest literary awards in China. He also wrote the screenplay for Zhang Yimou\'s 1996 film Shanghai Triad. **Tan Twan Eng** A Malaysian novelist who writes in English. He published his first novel, The Gift of Rain, in 2007 **Haruki Murakami** A Japanese writer. His novels, essays, and short stories have been best-sellers in Japan and internationally, with his work translated into 50 languages and having sold millions of copies outside Japan.  **Kyung-Sook Shin** He is also Shin Kyung-sook or Shin Kyoung-sook, is a South Korean writer. She was the only South Korean and only woman to win the Man Asian Literary Prize in 2012 for Please Look After Mom.  **Tong Zhonggui** He is known by the pen name of Su Tong is a Chinese writer. He was born in Suzhou and lives in Nanjing. He entered the Department of Chinese at Beijing Normal University in 1980, and started to publish novels in 1983. He is now vice president of the Jiangsu Writers Association. **Lü Jiamin** He is better known by his pseudonym Jiang Rong, is a Chinese writer, most famous for his best-selling 2004 novel Wolf Totem, which he wrote under the pseudonym Jiang Rong. He is married to fellow novelist Zhang Kangkang. **North America** consists of the large territories of Canada and the United States of America. As colonies, the US and Canada have relatively young literature, but reconsiderations are done today to include the oral narratives from the indigenous communities. Their literatures deal with issues of individualism, racism, slavery, migration among others. **Famous writers/authors:** **Ernest Hemingway** Known for his economical use of adjectives and matter-of-fact observations in his novels and short stories  **F. Scott Fitzgerald** Known for capturing the spirit of the Jazz Age in his works, which are characterized by lush prose and keen observations of society **Emily Dickinson** Considered one of America\'s greatest poets, her voice and way of writing continues to influence poets to this day  **Toni Morrison** The first Afro-American writer to receive the Nobel Prize, her most recognizable work is the novel Beloved **William Faulkner** Regarded as one of the most significant American writers of all time, his breakthrough novel, The Sound and the Fury, began to use stream of consciousness  **Edgar Allan Poe** Best known for his short stories, poems, and critical theories, he rose to fame through two of his most popular works, The Raven and The Tell-Tale Heart **Harper Lee** An influential American novelist and Pulitzer Prize-winning author, her acclaimed novel is To Kill a Mockingbird  **J. D. Salinger** His 1951 novel The Catcher in the Rye is widely considered among the greatest works of American fiction, and has become a classic of coming-of-age literature  **John Steinbeck** Won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1940 and the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1962 for his realist novels that examine American life **Maya Angelou** She was an American memoirist, poet, and civil rights activist. She published seven autobiographies, three books of essays, several books of poetry, and is credited with a list of plays, movies, and television shows spanning over 50 years. She received dozens of awards and more than 50 honorary degrees. **Nathaniel Hawthorne** He was an American novelist and short story writer. His works often focus on history, morality, and religion. He was born in 1804 in Salem, Massachusetts, from a family long associated with that town. **Mark Twain** He was an American writer, humorist and essayist. He was praised as the \"greatest humorist the United States has produced,\" **John Irving** He is an American-Canadian novelist, short story writer, and screenwriter. Irving achieved critical and popular acclaim after the international success of The World According to Garp in 1978.  **Europe** is one of the seven traditional continents of the Earth. Physically and geologically, Europe is the westernmost peninsula of Eurasia, west of Asia. Europe is bounded to the north by the Arctic Ocean, to the west by the Atlantic Ocean, to the south by the Mediterranean Sea, to the southeast by the Caucasus Mountains and the Black Sea and the waterways connecting the Black Sea to the Mediterranean. To the east, Europe is generally divided from Asia by the water divide of the Ural Mountains, the Ural River, and by the Caspian Sea. **European literature**, also known as **Western literature**, includes literature in many languages; among the most important of the modern written works are those in English, Spanish, French, Dutch, Polish, German, Italian, Modern Greek, Czech and Russian and works by the Scandinavians and Irish. Important classical and medieval traditions are those in Ancient Greek, Latin, Old Norse, Medieval French and the Italian Tuscan dialect of the renaissance.  Some of the European languages include: 1. **Greek** 2. **Latin** 3. **Germanic** 4. **Baltic** 5. **Slavic** 6. **Celtic**, and 7. **Romance** languages are all members of the Indo-European family. 8. **Finnish** 9. **Hungarian**, and 10. **Semitic languages** of the eastern Mediterranean, such as **Hebrew**, are not Indo-European. **Popular European Writers:** **J.K. Rowling** Joanne Rowling, known by her pen name J. K. Rowling, is a British author and philanthropist. She wrote Harry Potter, a seven-volume fantasy series published from 1997 to 2007.  Miguel de Cervantes Considered one of the most influential writers of all time, Cervantes wrote Don Quijote and many other novels, poems, plays, and short stories. **Anthony Marra** He is an American fiction writer. Marra has won numerous awards for his short stories, as well as his first novel, A Constellation of Vital Phenomena, which was a New York Times best seller. His story "Chechnya" received both a Pushcart Prize and the Narrative Prize. In addition, his work has appeared in *Best American Nonrequired Reading,* and he is the recipient of the prestigious Whiting Award. Marra is a graduate of the Iowa Writers' Workshop and lives in Oakland, California. **Franz Kafka** A German-language writer with a unique style and original stories, Kafka is considered one of the most influential writers of the 20th century. **Leo Tolstoy** A famous Russian writer and thinker, Tolstoy\'s novels bridged the gap between 19th and 20th century literature.  **Johann Wolfgang von Goethe** A versatile writer known for his lyrical poetry, novels, and dramatic poem Faust, Goethe also made contributions to biology, music, and philosophy. **Africa** is the world\'s second-largest and second-most populous continent after Asia. At about 30.3 million km² including adjacent islands, it covers 20% of Earth\'s land area and 6% of its total surface area. With 1.4 billion people as of 2021, it accounts for about 18% of the world\'s human population.  The most notable literary selections are those that capture the life and struggle of the African people. The literary tradition of Africa became richer than ever as it gained artistic and sophisticated expression in different languages. Traditional languages became vehicles of cultural thoughts. African literature represents the breadth and depth of universal experiences of man. The texts for the study of African literature shed light on controversial issues such as racial discrimination, apartheid, political conflicts, civil wars, feminism and gender sensitivity, and human rights issues. **Some Famous African Writers:** **Chinua Achebe** was born in the Igbo (formerly spelled *Ibo*) town of Ogidi in eastern Nigeria on November 16, 1930, the fifth child of Isaiah Okafor Achebe and Janet Iloegbunam Achebe. His father was an instructor in Christian catechism for the Church Missionary Society. **Alain Mabanckou** A novelist, journalist, poet, and academic, a French citizen born in the Republic of the Congo, he is currently a Professor of Literature at UCLA. **Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie** She is a Nigerian novelist, short-story writer and activist. Regarded as a central figure in postcolonial feminist literature, she is the author of the novels Purple Hibiscus, Half of a Yellow Sun and Americanah. **Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela** He was a South African anti-apartheid activist and politician who served as the first president of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He was the country\'s first black head of state and the first elected in a fully representative democratic election. **Buchi Emecheta OBE** She was a Nigerian writer who was the author of novels, plays, autobiography, and children\'s books. She first received notable critical attention for her 1974 novel, Second Class Citizen. Her other books include The Bride Price, The Slave Girl and The Joys of Motherhood.  **Latin America** Generally understood to consist of the entire continent of South America in addition to Mexico, Central America, and the islands of the Caribbean whose inhabitants speak a [Romance language](https://www.britannica.com/topic/Romance-languages). Latin American literature is known for its experimentation with structure and form, and for mixing fantasy and reality. Some common themes include the construction of identity and reality, politics and resistance, and civilization versus barbarism. Latin American authors usually write in Spanish, Portuguese, English, or a language native to their specific country. S**ome Famous Writers:** **Gabriel José de la Concordia García Márquez** Was a Colombian writer and journalist, known affectionately as Gabo or Gabito throughout Latin America. **Carlos Fuentes Macías** was a Mexican novelist and essayist. Among his works are The Death of Artemio Cruz, Aura, Terra Nostra, The Old Gringo and Christopher Unborn. **Rosario Castellanos Figueroa** She was a Mexican poet and author. She was one of Mexico\'s most important literary voices in the last century. Throughout her life, she wrote eloquently about issues of cultural and gender oppression, and her work has influenced Mexican feminist theory and cultural studies.  **Alejandro Andrés Zambra Infantas** He is a Chilean poet, short-story writer and novelist. He has been recognized for his talent as a young Latin American writer, chosen in 2007 as one of the \"Bogotá39\" and in 2010 by Granta as one of the best Spanish-language writers under the age of 35. **Isabel Angelica Allende Llona** She is a Chilean-American writer. Allende, whose works sometimes contain aspects of the genre magical realism, is known for novels such as The House of the Spirits and City of the Beasts, which have been commercially successful.
