GENERAL CHEMISTRY POLYMERS Presented by GROUP 2 What is a monomer Polymer? "poly" = many "mer" = parts or units - A Polymer is a long chain molecule that is formed from small molecules linked together. polymer Classification of Polymers 01 Natural Polymers 02 Semi-synthetic Polymers 03 Synthetic Polymers Natural Polymers - They occur naturally and are found in plants and animals. Examples: starch, protiens or polypeptides, and cellulose Semi-synthetic Polymers - They are derived from naturally occurring polymers and undergo further chemical modification. Examples: cellulose nitrate and cellulose acetate Synthetic Polymers - These are human-made polymers. Plastic is the most common and widely used synthetic polymer. Examples: polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polypropylene, epoxy resin, rubber, polyester, and nylon. Properties of Polymers 01 Physical Properties of Polymers 02 Mechanical Properties of Polymers 03 Thermal Properties of Polymers Physical Properties of Polymers -it describes the appearance and behavior of polymers in relation to their environment. Density Transparency Solubility Color Mechanical Properties of Polymers - it describes the behavior of polymers under stress or load. Strength Toughness Plasticity Stiffness Elasticity Thermal Properties of Polymers - it describes the behavior of polymers in relation to heat Melting Points Glass Transition Temperature Thermal conductivity Thermal expansions Summary Polymers are macromolecules formed by the combination of many small unit called monomers. Polymers can be classified as: Natural Polymers, Semi-synthetic Polymers, and Synthetic Polymers. Properties of polyers can be divided into three main types: Physical Properties, Mechanical Properties and Thermal Properties. Thank you!
