Introduction to Information and Communication Technology Jhon Kerby Gonzaga Chris Mark Bancale Ace Faustino Rueda Street, Calbayog City, Samar, Philippines | +63 (055) 533 9857 | [email protected] | www.nwssu.edu.ph Introduction of ICT ICT, or information and communications technology, is the infrastructure and components that enable modern computing. History of ICT 19th Century The telegraph revolutionized communication by enabling the transmission of messages over long distances. The invention of the telephone in the late 1800s further advanced communication by allowing real-time conversations over long distances. Mid-20th Century The first electronic computer, the ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer), was developed in 1946. These early computers were large, expensive, and primarily used by government agencies and large corporations. 1970 Microprocessors 21st Century In the 21st century, the proliferation of mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets has further accelerated the development of ICT. These devices allow people to access information and communicate on the go, and have facilitated the development of new applications and services. What is ICT? ICT (Information and Communication Technology) refers to the convergence of audiovisual, telephone, and computer networks into a unified system. It includes a wide range of communication devices like radios, TVs, cell phones, computers, and satellites, along with the associated services such as video conferencing and distance learning. What are the components of ICT? The list of ICT components is exhaustive and continues to grow. Some components, such as computers and telephones, have existed for decades. Others, such as smartphones, digital TVs and robots, are more recent entries. ICT components include the following: Hardware Software Operating Systems The Role of ICT in our Society ICT plays a critical role in modern society, enabling individuals and organizations to access and share information across various platforms and devices. It has revolutionized the way people communicate, learn, work, and conduct business. Advantages of ICT “Globalization” Video conferencing reduces travel expenses by eliminating the need for flights and accommodation. ICT has not only connected people and countries but also integrated the global economy, making business interactions more cost-effective. “Cost Effectiveness” Sending an email is often cheaper than making a phone call. ICT has also automated business processes, further reducing costs. “Time Savings” Online shopping allows you to purchase goods and have them delivered to your doorstep without leaving your home. Payments can be made electronically, saving time and effort. “Job Creation” ICT has generated new and diverse job opportunities, such as computer programmers, system developers, hardware and software engineers, and web designers. “Education” Computers, software, and the internet have expanded educational opportunities. Degrees can be completed online from home, allowing individuals to work while pursuing education. Disadvantages of ICT “Blackmail” The internet can be used for extortion and blackmail, where individuals threaten to cause harm or disclose information to extract money or valuables. “Unemployment” Automation and computers can replace human labor, leading to job losses as employers seek cost savings. “Privacy Issues" Despite the convenience of ICT, it poses privacy risks, including cell phone signal interception and email hacking, which can lead to unauthorized access to personal information. “Computer Viruses” Malware, worms, Trojans, and spam can disrupt daily life and cause significant damage to systems. “Social Media Addiction” Excessive use of smartphones, gaming consoles, and social media can lead to reduced engagement in real-world activities and interpersonal communication.
