It is the first day of summer, and they should be celebrating their freedom, playing kickball on the street with their friends. Instead they are waiting for a moving van to arrive. The living room is piled high with brown cardboard boxes, each one labeled with its destination. 2 “My stomach is full of butterflies,” admits Jason. “I don’t want to live on a stupid farm with a bunch of stinky animals.” He doesn’t want to let his sister see him cry, but a tear runs down his cheek. Just then, a van turns down their street, and their mother yells from inside, “It’s here!” She is looking forward to the move, and so is Marta. But today it only makes him feel worse. “You love being there when we visit every summer. When we’re not there, we both talk about how much we miss it. You’ll feel right at home.” 4 “No, I won’t,” Jason mumbles, looking like the world is coming to an end. 5 “Come on,” Marta says, “cheer up. It’s going to be a fun, new adventure. You’ll see.” She stands up, brushes off her shorts, and heads inside. 6 Jason can’t shake the feeling that his life is taking a terrible turn for the worse. He is heading to middle school next year. The thought of being in a new place, not just a new school, is terrifying. He’ll have to ride a bus to school instead of just walking down the block. He’ll have to make new friends, with the exception of Frank, the boy who lives down the road from his grandparents’ farm. He and Frank see each other every summer while Jason’s family spends two weeks on the farm, and Frank is the only thing that might make this whole situation tolerable. As Jason looks up, a dark cloud appears between the tall buildings, blotting out the sun. “That figures,” he says to himself. He finds it easier to be with two people than the dozens of kids he used to see on the crowded city playground. Marta misses the city, but Jason is starting to like all the space and the quiet. He even likes the chickens, although he’s a little nervous around the goats. If he isn’t careful, they try to nibble at his clothes. 7 Two hours later, Marta happily scampers through a busy store with her mom. Jason, Frank, and Dakota are climbing a steep trail.
