Simple Hold Neck and Waist Hold Head Control Scruffing Ultrasound Ear Swab Nail Trim Basic Ferret Restraint | AtDove Drug Therapy IV - Very ill animals IM - Good route, limited muscle mass SC - Preferable parenteral route in most cases PO - Palatable liquids (easy) Non-palatable liquids (impossible) Pills (difficult) Giving Oral Medications Venipuncture Large sample sites (1-3 cc) Jugular Vein –> 22-25 GA / 3 cc Cranial Vena Cava -> 25 GA / 3 cc Ventral Tail Artery -> 22-25 GA / 3-6 cc Small sample sites (0.3-0.4 cc) Lateral Saphenous Vein Cephalic Vein Jugular Venipuncture Jugular Vein Jugular Venipuncture Cranial Vena Cava Venipuncture Cranial Vena Cava https://lafeber.com/vet/blood-collection-in-ferrets/ Intravenous Catheter Lateral Saphenous & Cephalic Veins  Sedation/anesthesia  Puncture skin w/ 20-22 gauge needle, avoiding vessel  20-22 gauge over the needle catheter  Wrap legs https://lafeber.com/vet/intravenous-catheter-placement-in-small- mammals/ IV Catheter Possible problems  Overhydration  Entanglement  Chewing the line Fluid Therapy Routes of administration  SC - Divide calculated volume/day (to be given in 2 to 3 sessions throughout the day)  IV - Very ill animals -> infusion pump (use pediatric drip set!!!) Blood Transfusion Consider if PCV is 15 or less  May tolerate PCV of 12% without transfusion if anemia is chronic  No detectable blood groups  Best donor - Lg male (6-10 ml safely)  Anesthetize donor Blood Transfusion Jugular Catheter  Slow bolus  Infusion pump Intraosseous Catheter Bone Marrow Aspiration Proximal femur is best site 20 gauge, 1.5” spinal needle Urine Collection Free Catch Urethral Catheterization Cystocentesis Male Ferret Dribbling Urine Urethral Catheterization Urethral Catheterization Cystocentesis
