INTRODUCTION TO CHANGE MANAGEMENT Introduction to Change Management Understanding the Basics and Setting the Stage What is Change Management? Definition: Change Management is the systematic approach to dealing with the transition or transformation of an organization's goals, processes, or technologies. Value: – Ensures smooth transitions during organizational change. – Minimizes resistance and maximizes engagement. – Drives long-term success by aligning people, processes, products, and technology with new directions. Why is Change Management Important? Key Points: – Aligns organizational activities with strategic goals. – Reduces resistance to change by involving stakeholders. – Enhances the likelihood of successful adoption of new processes or technologies. Impact: – Drives organizational success by fostering adaptability and resilience. Types of Organizational Change Transformational Change vs. Adaptive Change – Transformational Change: Large-scale, fundamental shifts in how an organization operates (e.g., mergers, large-scale restructuring). – Adaptive Change: Small, gradual adjustments to existing processes (e.g., process improvements, minor policy updates). Types of Organizational Change (ctd...) Structural, Strategic, and Technology Change – Structural Change: Changes in the organizational hierarchy, roles, and responsibilities. – Strategic Change: Adjustments in the organization's overall direction, goals, or strategies. – Technology Change: Implementation of new technologies or systems that alter how work is done. Key Drivers of Change Internal Factors: – Leadership changes. – Strategic shifts. – Organizational culture. External Factors: – Market trends and competition. – Regulatory changes. – Technological advancements. CHANGE TOWER CHALLENGE In Class Group Activity "Change Tower" Challenge Objective: Build a tower representing an organization, and see how it adapts to different types of change. Materials: Plastic cups or blocks, Painter’s Tape, Pens. "Change Tower" Challenge Steps: 1. Brainstorm labels for each block/cup with key elements of the organization (e.g., leadership, technology). 2. Label the blocks 3. Build the initial tower, representing the current state of the organization. 4. Introduce internal transformational and incremental changes by modifying the tower. 5. Simulate an unexpected external impact to see how the tower (organization) responds. 6. Reflect on the impact of internal and external drivers of change. Step 1: Forms Groups Find a group of approximately 7-8 people – This will be your group for the course. Record the name and student ID of each person and share with Shauna who will set up the groups in MyCanvas. Step 2: Building the Initial Tower Instructions: Use the provided materials to build a tower that represents your organization. Labeling: Label each block/cup with something that represents a key element of the organization (e.g., leadership, technology, employee satisfaction). Focus: Ensure the tower is stable and as tall as possible. Step 3: Introducing Transformational and Incremental Change Incremental Change: Adjust 2-3 blocks slightly without removing them. Observe the impact on stability. Transformational Change: Remove 2-3 blocks from the base and reposition them at the top. Observe the impact on stability. Discussion Prompt: How did these changes affect your tower’s stability? Step 4: Reflect on Change Drivers Activity: Discuss what internal and external factors could have caused the changes you made to your tower. Labeling: Write these factors on new Post-it notes and place them around your tower. Discussion Prompt: How do these drivers influence the type of change and the organization’s response? Step 5: Simulating Unexpected External Impact Activity: Simulate an unexpected external event by lightly tapping the table or removing a critical block. Observation: Observe and discuss how the tower responds to this external pressure. Discussion Prompt: What does this tell us about the importance of planning for unexpected changes? Step 6: Group Presentations 2 groups will be selected at random to present their observations about change Summary Change management is crucial for maintaining stability and achieving organizational success. Different types of changes (transformational vs. adaptive) have different impacts on the organization. Understanding and planning for both internal and external drivers of change is essential.
