The boys were part of their school the St. Joseph's Institution band [SJi] and played the tuba and the trumpet [musical instruments]. One year, the SJI band made it to the finals of the Inter-Secondary School Band competition. On the day of finals, we joined thousands of other anxious parents and teachers at the National Stadium and watched the children line up for the march pact. The SJI band stood in the middle of the field with the other school bands. The Anglo-Chinese Secondary school band came marching, smart and proud, the drum major led his hand through their steps in perfect time. The Raffles School band was equally good, if not better, They executed the most intricate moments while making beautiful music. The spectators cheered. By the time, the SJI band came on, the crowds were enthusiastic. They performed well, not a step out of line, not a note out of tune. The drum major led his band with grace and majesty. It seemed to us that the SJI band got the loudest applause. We were jumping up and down. “We are going to win". I said. Slyvia nodded her happy agreement. SJI did not win. When the winner was named, the bands broke into pandemonium (uproar). The winners shrieked with joy, hugged each other, threw their hats into the air, and generally expressed their delight. The losers wandered off or sat on the ground, many were weeping. Our children were too far away for us to see their faces, but we noticed that the SJI boys were still standing, quiet in the midst of all the noise, listening as their drum major addressed them. Then he raised his stick, and across the field and the noise, we could make out the familiar music- The SJI school song. Silence fell on those near the SJI group and spread further. Something was happening. Suddenly the SJI boys marched forward in perfect formation and marched out in step, still playing the music, bravely carrying their disappointment within. The departing spectators stopped, fascinated by this display of dignity in defeat. They began applauding, then cheering the SJI band, Hail the losers! Even in defeat, they won praise. A few days later the local newspaper printed a letter that praised the SJI band for the way it had won the day despite losing the competition. The writer concluded, 'In life knowing how to in lose is as important as knowing how to win.....' to me, it seems more important because how often do we get to win? 30.
