A business letter is left justified—this is different than a friendly letter where the paragraphs are indented. 2. Your address is the first component of a business letter located at the top of the letter. You may also choose to use a letterhead which would take the place of your address. The letterhead does not have to be left justified and can be placed at any position at the top of your letter; it may also include a small icon. 3. The next component is the date—formally written out-- followed by the recipient’s name and address. “Where Education Comes To Life” For more formal written communication, you need to use a business letter; continued… 4. There are four spaces, or three empty lines, separating the date and the recipient’s information. 5. The next component is the salutation. Notice that the salutation is followed by a colon, compared to a comma, which is used in a friendly letter. 6. The body of the letter is single spaced, with a double space between paragraphs. The closing of your letter should be formal and professional—it is a good idea to use “sincerely” or “thank you”. 7. Component seven is your signature, followed by your typed name and your typed title.
