Eng exam 2025 **Essay/story** **Coherence:** **P** parallel structure- Pattern in words Parallel structure allows readers to recognize the relationships that exist between multiple ideas presented in sequence if these ideas are all expressed using the same style of phrasing. **P** pronoun use- replacing a "Proper noun" with a pronoun, Pronoun reference improves coherence in a piece of writing by eliminating excessive repetition of nouns and/or proper nouns. **R** repetition- repeating a word/phrase, Allows readers to recognize how the thesis (main idea) has been developed throughout the text. Note that repetition, as a method of coherence, only applies to words and/or phrases that relate to the thesis. **T** transitions- words/phrases that help readers understand one concept to the next They help readers move from one idea to the next, and to anticipate the relationship between these ideas. For instance, emphatic transitions (EX: "in addition...") suggest an author is elaborating a point that was previously made, whereas oppositional transitions (EX: "however...") suggest an author is presenting an idea that opposes a point that was previously expressed. 6pt if needed **Emphasis:** **Parallel structure:** When authors use the same grammatical form to reference multiple ideas in sequence, it creates emphasis by implying that each idea carries equal weight or importance. **Punctuation:** Authors are strategic in using certain forms of punctuation to emphasize ideas in their writing. This can be achieved through exclamation points, dashes, quotation marks, etc. **Repetition:** Emphasis can be created in an obvious way through the deliberate repetition of key words and phrases. **Rhetorical questions:** Rhetorical questions create emphasis because they exist to make a point, not to seek an answer. They often express the opinion of the author and invite readers to consider an issue from that perspective, as well. **Sentence brevity / fragments:** Brief sentences, or incomplete sentences (otherwise known as sentence fragments), are also emphatic because they are concise and direct in expressing a point or idea. In this sense, they can also communicate a sense of urgency. EXAMPLE: "It matters. A lot." Model ansewe: Emphasis has been achieved in the essay "Bats are the Real Superheroes of the Animal World" through the use of rhetorical questions and punctuation. After addressing the vast number of bat species that exist in the world, Bates asks, *"What makes these flying mammals so successful?*" (2). This demonstrates use of a rhetorical question in that it is not meant to be answered, but instead allows the author to express a point - namely, that bats have been able to thrive around the world. Use of this rhetorical question functions emphatically by introducing the thesis, or main idea, of the essay, which is the idea that there are many reasons, presented in the essay as "superpowers," to account for why bats have had so much success as a species. Emphasis has also been achieved in this essay through use of punctuation. At the end of the essay, Bates focuses on the role bats have played in keeping environments healthy: *"Many bat species boost plant health and diversity: At least 549 plant species either are pollinated or dispersed by bats"* (25). Emphatic punctuation can be observed here through the use of a colon, which indicates that the author is going to present an additional idea or piece of information that directly relates to the previous point. Here, the author first makes the point that bats promote *"plant health and diversity,"* and then uses a colon to elaborate on this point by providing a statistic to emphasize how many plant species rely on bats for pollination and dispersal. Clearly then, emphasis has been achieved in the essay "Bats are the real superheroes of the Animal World" through the use of rhetorical questions and punctuation. **Style:** We describe style as the formal or informal approach an author has taken in constructing a piece of text. **Informal:** - - - - - - - - **Formal:** - - - - - - - - ![](media/image7.png) **Visuals** **Message:** - - - - - **Title:** a title should be far more abstract and figurative than a message. And while you're free to use fragments, imperative statements and informal pronouns, you should still avoid cliches. ![](media/image6.png) **Mood:** **COLOUR:** **POTENTIAL SIGNIFICANCE:** ------------- ---------------------------------------------------------- **Red** Energy, anger, evil, excitement, danger, joy, passion **Pink** Happiness, lightheartedness, youth, innocence, romance **Orange** Warmth, joy, positivity, action, unease, danger **Yellow** Energy, vibrancy, lightness, optimism **Green** Wealth, nature, sickness, poison, envy **Blue** Contemplation, harmony, tranquility, sadness, melancholy **Violet** Royalty, decadence, mysticism, passion **Brown** Earth, life, growth, decay **Black** Drama, death, elegance, seriousness, danger, uncertainty **White** Purity, innocence, vulnerability **LINE:** **POTENTIAL SIGNIFICANCE:** ----------------------- ------------------------------------------------------- **Horizontal** Calmness, rest, or repose **Vertical** Loftiness and spirituality or stability and structure **Diagonal** Movement, direction, or tension **Curved: *Shallow*** Movement, comfort, safety, familiarity, tranquility **Curved: *Deep*** Movement, confusion, turbulence, tension, anxiety **Jagged** Movement, tension, or anxiety **Directional** Emphasis **Thick** Emphasis **Thin** Softness **Repeating** Unity **Visual elements:** - - - - - - - - - - - - - - **Explain elemnt:** - - - - - - -.
