Exercise risk assessment procedures. Contraindications for exercise participation. Cardiometabolic changes from cancer and treatment. Considerations for exercise risk and safe exercise participation. “Red flags” requiring medical investigation. School of Allied Health, Exercise and Sports Sciences 3 SCHOOL OF EXERCISE SCIENCE, SPORT & HEALTH 3 Medical Clearance All clients who have or have previously had cancer should have ideally have clearance from their GP or Medical Oncologist to exercise. □ But this may not be provided for legal reasons. May assist with: □ Advising of other health conditions client may have. □ Providing restrictions. □ Communicating treatment team goals. Obtaining a referral for exercise implies medical clearance (fit to exercise). School of Allied Health, Exercise and Sports Sciences 4 SCHOOL OF EXERCISE SCIENCE, SPORT & HEALTH 4 Exercise Risk Assessment There are currently no ESSA/ACSM cancer- specific pre-exercise screening tools. It is important to ask specific details about their cancer history and journey to ensure safety and specificity.  The process should be used to identify client’s risk.  Be aware that all client’s with cancer will typically be high risk (see Q6).
