Educational Psychology Lecture 4 Almina Pancho Ramos, PhD, RPsy, LPT Unit IV: MOTIVATION AND LEARNING A. Motivation in Learning and Teaching B. Behavioral Views of Learning C. Cognitive Views of Learning A. MOTIVATION IN LEARNING AND TEACHING Motivation is an internal state that propels individuals to engage in goal-directed behavior. often understood as a force that explains why people or animals initiate, continue, or Motivation in Learning and Teaching Learning is the process of acquiring new understanding, knowledge, behaviors, skills, values, attitudes, and preferences. ability to learn is possessed by humans and animals Motivation in Learning and Teaching Motivation in learning is the desire or willingness to do something,  plays a key role in education, behavior, and achievements in Motivation in Learning and Teaching Intrinsic motivation means they have internal reasons for wanting to learn. Extrinsic motivation is driven by external rewards. These can be tangible, such as money or grades or intangible, such as praises or recognition. Motivation in Learning and Teaching How does motivation affect learning and teaching? Motivation has a direct impact on how an individual learns. 1. it increases an individual's energy level, 2. determines the persistence in reaching a specific goal, 3. affects the types of learning techniques used and an individual's B. BEHAVIORAL VIEWS OF LEARNING Types of Behavioral Learning John B. Watson Ivan Pavlov B.F. Skinner Albert Bandura C. COGNITIVE VIEWS OF LEARNING Jung's Scale of Cognitive Learning Style Gagne’s Conditions of Learning Theory Five Categories of Learning: 1. Intellectual skills: Creating individual competence and ability to respond to stimuli. 2. Cognitive strategies: The capability to learn, think, and remember 3. Verbal information: Rote memorization of information. 4. Motor skills: The capability to learn to drive, Gagne’s Eight Ways of Learning 1. Signal Learning: A general response to a signal. Like a dog responding to a command. 2. Stimulus-Response Learning: A precise response to a distinct stimulus. 3. Chaining: A chain of two or more stimulus- response connections is acquired. Gagne’s Eight Ways of Learning 5. Discrimination Learning: The ability to make different responses to similar- appearing stimuli. 6. Concept Learning: A common response to a class of stimuli. 7. Rule Learning: Learning a chain of two or more concepts. Gestalt Learning Theory  relies on the law of simplicity.  states that each learning stimulus is perceived in its simplest form.  states that we use our senses and previous experiences to gain knowledge about the world around us.
