# The Architecture Design Process ## EA33 Theories of Architecture 2 ### Lecture 2 ## Architecture Theories Consist of all the knowledge an architect needs to use in their work such as: - How to select the best site. - How to select construction materials and structure systems - Advice and principles on how to design particular buildings. - Ease of maintenance and repair, cost saving decisions. ## Type of Theories ### Thematic Theories Theories have one objective such as theories of classical order (Doric columns). ### Theories of Synthesis - Physiological needs - Need of Security - Need to belong and be accepted in a group. - Need of self-fulfillment. - Cognitive and aesthetic needs (how easy it is to find your way around). ## Elements Shaping Architecture Design ### Functional requirements - Use program - Internal Circulation - Functional Relationships - Technical issues - Regulations ### Site Conditions - Natural Characteristics - Orientation - Climate - Circulation - Parking - Building Relationships ### Technology and Structure - Technology - Structure. - Materials. - Systems The Watercube in Beijing is inspired by soap bubbles. ### Culture - Religion - Philosophy - Science - Art - Political Issues ## Examples ### Santorini Greece - Mediterranean Architecture ### Sidi Bou Said - Architecture of Siwa Siwa oasis in the Western Desert is known for its unique microclimate, culture and landscapes. The Karshif buildings are one of the most distinctive and iconic features in the scenery of the oasis. The solid housing substance comes from the mixture of mud, salt and other minerals from the Siwan salt lake. ### Bourge Cathedral, France The design of the building is affected by the following: - The religious - Culture - Climate - Structure factors (they used buttresses to provide large heights and spans). ### Centre Pompidou, by Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers ## Stages of Architecture Design Process ### A. Program Development #### Identify the following constraints - The purpose of the project/building - The relation between the building, the society and the environment - The external and internal factors that affect the design - Building codes and regulations #### Make a good research on the subject of research - Research on similar examples and collection of space requirements data - Compare and select more appropriate systems (mechanical, environmental) #### Define accurately the problem - Review and evaluate all preceding work so far. Examine all needs in a matrix to show conflicts to develop a full program ### B. Project Analysis #### Site Analysis - Apply requirement of program from stage A in your particular site. Put all information on a site map and calculate areas and volume spaces. - Diagram analysis of site - Sketchy site plan #### Building analysis - Space requirements - Functional relationship between different elements - Determine the appropriate circulation pattern #### Schematic design of plan - Select an appropriate module ### Stages of Architecture Design Process, continued - C. Design Stage ### Site Considerations - Safety - Climate - Scale (Skyline) - Accessibility - Context - Maintenance ### Diagram of Site Analysis ### C. Design Stage, continued - Develop and evaluate alternative solutions - Select the most suitable design solution - Re-compare program with selected solution and develop the selected solution - Final Drawings and Presentation ### Activity 1 Analyze the following figures according to the element that shaped its architecture design. The image is a floor plan labelled: First floor architectural plan of Manzil Zeinab Khatoun.
