e-Learning Saddam Kanaan, PT, PhD [email protected] Associate Professor– College of Health Sciences November, 2024 Material Prepared by Dr. Tareq Aldeiri Learning objectives By the end of this lecture, you should be able to: Explain what e-Learning is Provide examples of e-Learning Describe the benefits of e-Learning, to the student and teacher Describe the challenges and limitations of e-learning Describe the difference between synchronous and asynchronous learning, and provide examples of each Describe what blended learning is and how it can be utilised in teaching Provide tips on how to engage learners online 2 What is e-Learning? Multiple definitions: Use of the Internet for communication and learning between students and teachers (virtual online classes) Use of electronic devices/programs/software to improve understanding and learning of a particular topic: Anatomy apps Virtual patient simulations Simulated surgery apps 3 Examples of e-Learning E-learning is more than just: Giving a lecture/seminar online to replace face-to-face learning E-learning compliments traditional learning to improve understanding Discussion boards Online whiteboards Example in-class multiple choice questions (e.g. Kahoot) Digital health applications 4 Evolution of Education Technology IMPACT Internet: TIME Greatest impact TIME Overall benefits of e-learning Can improve teacher-student interaction in learning Up to 60% of information in traditional didactic lectures is forgotten within 20 minutes of the completion of the lecture Promotes student empowerment in learning Teaching philosophy becomes focused on student learning rather than lecturing Cost-effective Provides more flexibility in learning Can be personalized to the individual (i.e., the student can revise the information, choose types of learning modules to learn first in online courses, etc.). 6 What are the benefits of e-Learning modes? Distance learning Use of in-class -Virtual/simulated learning: computer/software devices Accessible from anywhere  Helps further enhance don’t need to be physically in understanding of difficult topics: i.e simulated surgery games one place i.e software platforms Student can learn at their own i.e dosing calculations/conversions pace and speed Improves efficiency of how Accessibility to a wide range information is taught, retained, of learning resources and utilized Allows students to repeat Improves engagement in the lecture recording multiple classroom and with learning times material 7 Successful features of e-Learning Easy to use Provides access to different activities Be customizable Be flexible and adaptable to different settings Utilises visual learning* Has interactive features* 8 What are the challenges and limitations of e- Learning? Reliance/ Lack of dependence that engagement and motivation when Technical issues everyone has equal access to not face-to-face technology Sense of student Requires upskilling of older isolation teachers/staff Humans learn best in members to use e- groups and when surrounded by others learning concepts in teaching 9 Synchronous e-Learning Students and teachers present together on the same platform at the same time Examples include: Zoom WebEx Microsoft Teams Blackboard Discussion Boards Attempts to mimic face-to-face classroom teaching but without the physical presence of the participants Photo adopted from: https://taketwotechnologies.com/synchronous-learning/ 10 Asynchronous e-learning Self-directed and self-paced learning Student can complete pre-recorded lectures, modules, and activities at his/her own pace Allows for flexibility in learning – beneficial for students who have health issues (i.e ADHD, anxiety, stress) Can lead to lack of student accountability in learning due to decreased motivation to complete tasks Teachers cannot gauge what the student’s understanding is  unable to provide extra support 11 Synchronous vs Asynchronous learning 12 What is blended learning? Traditional teaching methods are combined with e-learning techniques Helps create a more personalized learning environment Example: Flipped classroom model: pre-recorded lecture at home then problem-based learning activities in classroom Using virtual simulations to teach key profession skills: how to insert IV line, resect tumour, dispense medication etc Blended learning supports increased active learning rather than passive learning  better understanding and retention 13 Blended learning (continued) Blended learning ≠ online learning Counts on face-to-face learning and one-on-one with students Changes teaching strategy from teacher-focused to student- focused Teacher guides to the answer rather than tells  improves student learning Challenges  relies on student preparing before the lesson and taking accountability in learning 14 Summary e-Learning is and not limited to the use of technology to assist in learning, either via face-to-face classroom learning or online learning e-Learning can improve understanding, improve student engagement and interaction, and promote greater learning. e-Learning can be synchronous or asynchronous e-Learning can be most effective in a blended learning model 15 References e-Learning.
