Overview of pediatric nursing Outlines:- Introduction Definition of pediatric nursing Purposes/goals of pediatric nursing Scopes of pediatric nursing Role of the pediatric nurse Qualities essential for a good pediatric nurse Current concepts of pediatric nursing Changes influencing nursing care of children Introduction Pediatric nursing plays an important role in shaping the future. Children are members of families, communities and society. The wellbeing of children is associated with wellbeing of their families, communities and the society in which they live. Pediatric nursing is the specialized area of the nursing practice concerning the care of children during wellness and illness, which include preventive, curative and rehabilitative care of children. The term "pediatrics" is derived from the Greek words, "pedia" means child, "iatric" means treatment, "ics" means branch of science. Thus ”pediatrics" means the science of child care and scientific treatment of childhood diseases. Definition of the pediatric nursing:- Pediatric nursing is the science and art of giving nursing care to children from birth to adolescence with emphasis on the physical, mental, social and emotional growth. Purposes of the pediatric nursing:- To promote the highest possible level/or state of health in each child. It consists of:- a- Preventing disease or injury. b- Assisting children, including those with a permanent disability or health problems to achieve and maintain an optimum level of health and development. c- Treating or rehabilitating children who have health deviation. Scopes of pediatric nursing:- Pediatric nurses have the responsibility in providing nursing interventions either in :- ambulatory setting : such as home, schools and or physician's clinic where children and their parents have health or counseling needs Or /institutional setting : such as general or specialized hospitals where care is provided to sick children and their parents. Role of the pediatric nurses:- 1 -Family advocacy / caring Family is encouraged changing or supporting existing health care practices and is involved in the child's care when possible 2- Disease prevention and health promotion Every nurse involved with child care must practice within the overall dimension of preventive health. 3 - Health teaching Health teaching may be a direct goal of the nurse, such as during parenting classes or may be indirect, such as helping parents and children understand a diagnosis or medical treatment 4 - Support and counseling Counseling involves a mutual exchange of ideas and opinions. It involves support as well as teaching, 5 - Therapeutic role A significant aspect of the therapeutic role is continual assessment and evaluation of physical status. 6 - Coordination and collaboration Nurses as members of the health team. collaborate and coordinate their services with other professionals activities 7- Research Nurses need to be more involved in research and in applying research findings to their practice 8- Health care planning health care planning involves promoting the highest quality of health care. Qualities essential for good pediatric nurse :- 1- She is prepared to care for the family members including the care of healthy and sick child. This care involves physical and psychological aspects. 2- Have an interest in family care and love for children. 3- Understand the culture from which the family comes. 4- Be a good observer. 5- Be truthful 6- Be dependable. 7- Be punctual 8- Sympathetic. 9- Kinds and patient 10- Cheerful 11- Be tact and tide 12- Like teaching Current Concepts of pediatric nursing:- 1-Family centered care: It is enabling families by creating opportunities for all family members to display their current abilities and competencies that are necessary to meet the needs of the child and family 2-High technology care: Technologic advances will also influence pediatric nurses’ role, increase technical skills related to patient care as well as the demand for computer knowledge in the work sitting e.g. pediatric call centers 3- Atraumatic care : Atraumatic care is the use of interventions that eliminate or minimize the psychological and physical distress experienced by children and their families 4- Cost containment: It refers to management strategies developed to reduce the cost of hospitalization and inefficiencies in the health care system. Inefficiencies can occur in the way health care is used by consumers. For example, taking a child to the emergency department (ED) for treatment of a cold is inappropriate use. It would be more efficient for the child’s cold to be treated at a clinic. 5-Evidence based practice: The practice of health care in which the practitioner uses the most current and valid research findings as the basis for clinical decisions 6- Critical thinking : It is the use of clinical judgment and purposeful thought and reasoning to make decisions that lead to positive outcomes for the pediatric patient 7 -Concept related to the child: Mortality The incidence or number of individuals who have died over a specific period of time they have usually presented as rates per 100.000 Morbidity The prevalence of specific illness in the population at a particular time.these are generally presented as rats per 1000 population 8-Health indicators : Health indicators are standardized measures by which to compare health status and health system performance. 7-Nursing process: The nursing process is a method of problem identification and problem solving that describes what nurse actually does.
