1. Processor, memory and input/output, and storage. Shortcuts is creating links to files and apps. Four ways to adjust keyboard settings: 1. Controlling the pointing device with the keyboard by using the arrow and other keys. 2. Changing the language or dialect associated with the keyboard. 3. Creating new keyboard shortcuts to commands or enabling sticky keys. 4. Adjusting the settings for toggle keys, for example the Caps Lock key. © 2022 Cengage Learning®. Pointing device is an input device that allows a user to control a pointer on the screen. Two functions of a pointing device: 1. A pointer is a small symbol on the screen whose location and shape change as a user moves a pointing device. 2. Can be used to move the insertion point; select text, graphics, and other objects. A mouse is a pointing device that fits under the palm of your hand comfortably. Seven types of mouse: 1. An optical mouse uses optical sensors that emit and sense light to detect the mouse’s movement. 2. A laser mouse uses laser sensors that emit and sense light to detect the mouse’s movement. 3. A touch mouse is a touch-sensitive mouse that recognizes touch, detecting movement of the mouse and operations. 4. An air mouse, is a motion-sensing mouse that allows you to control by moving the mouse in predetermined directions. 5. A touchpad is a small, flat, rectangular pointing device that is sensitive to pressure and motion. 6. A trackball is a stationary pointing device with a ball on its top or side. 7. A wireless mouse, or cordless mouse, is a battery-powered device that transmits data using wireless technology. © 2022 Cengage Learning®. A pointing stick is a pressure-sensitive pointing device shaped like a pencil eraser that is positioned between keys on a keyboard. A touch screen is a touch-sensitive display device that recognize multiple points of contact at the same time. Touch-sensitive pads is an input device that enables users to scroll through and play music, view pictures, watch videos or customize settings. A gesture is a motion you make on a touch screen with the tip of one or more fingers or your hand. Six devices that utilize touch input: 1. Monitors and screens: Allow users to interact with the operating system without a keyboard or pointing device. 2. Wearable devices: Such as smartwatches, do not have room for a physical keyboard, so they mainly rely on touch input. 3. Portable media players: Widely use touch as the primary method of input so that the size of the screen on the device is maximized. 4. Digital cameras: Users perform gestures such as swiping left and right on the screen to browse photos. 5. Kiosks: Such as those at an airport allowing you to check in for a flight, can be used by hundreds of people per day. 6. Navigation systems: Allow users to perform actions such as tapping to enter a destination address, or stretching to zoom. © 2022 Cengage Learning®. Pen input devices can be used to input information on a screen or rely on a special device to capture and digitize input. Four types of pen input devices: 1. A stylus is a small metal or plastic device that looks like a tiny ink pen but uses pressure instead of ink. 2. A digital pen is an input device that captures and converts a user’s handwriting or drawings into a digital format. 3. Signature capture pad is to capture a handwritten signature, a user writes their name on a signature capture pad with a stylus that is attached to the device. 4. Graphics tablet is to use pen input on a computer that does not have a touch screen. © 2022 Cengage Learning®. Game controller as the input device that directs movements and actions of on-screen objects. Five types of game controllers: 1. A gamepad is held with both hands, controls the movement and actions of players or objects in video games or computer games. 2. A joystick is a handheld vertical lever mounted on a base to control the actions of the simulated vehicle or player. 3. A light gun is used to shoot targets and moving objects after you pull the trigger on the weapon. 4. A dance pad is a flat electronic device divided into panels that users press with their feet in response to instructions from a music video game. 5. Motion-sensing game controllers allow the user to guide on-screen elements by moving a handheld input device in predetermined directions through the air. © 2022 Cengage Learning®. Digital input devices are devices that enable you to capture and process video, audio, or data. Voice input is the process of entering input by speaking into a microphone. Three types of voice input: 1. Audio input encompasses entering any sound into the computer, such as speech, music, and sound effects. 2. Voice recognition, also called speech recognition, is the computer’s capability of distinguishing spoken words. 3. Music production software allows users to record, compose, mix, and edit music and sounds. © 2022 Cengage Learning®. Video input involves capturing full-motion images and storing them on a computer or mobile device’s storage medium or on the cloud. Four types of video input: 1. A Digital Video (DV) camera records video as digital signals, which you can transfer directly to a computer or mobile device with the appropriate connection. 2. A video capture port is a video capture card, which converts an analog video signal into a digital signal that a computer can process. 3. A video conference is a meeting between two or more geographically separated people who use a network or the Internet to transmit audio and video data. 4. A whiteboard is another window on the screen that displays notes and drawings simultaneously on all participants’ screens. Six steps are involved in the process of using DV technology: 1. Select a DV camera. 2. Record a video. 3. Transfer and manage videos. 4. Edit a video. 5. Enhance a video. 6. Distribute a video. © 2022 Cengage Learning®. Motion input, sometimes called gesture recognition, users can guide on-screen elements using air gestures. Motion-sensing game controllers enable a user to guide on-screen elements by moving a handheld input device through the air. Four types of field that use motion input: 1. Motion input in entertainment: Handheld devices that enable gamers to use sweeping arm movements to simulate sports activities. 2. Motion input in the military: The military uses for training, such as flight simulation or weapon usage. 3. Motion input in sports: Coaches and sports trainers use to improve athletes’ performance and to correct inefficient or injury-causing motions. 4. Motion input in the medical field: Surgeons can practice new technologies in a simulated environment. © 2022 Cengage Learning®. NFC (near field communication) is a close-distance network protocol used by smartphones and other devices to read data from another device or an item. An optical scanner, usually called a scanner, is a light-sensing input device that reads printed text and graphics and then translates the results into a form the computer can process. Six types of scanning readers: 1. An optical reader: Is a device that uses a light source to read characters, marks, and codes and then converts them into digital data that a computer can process. 2. A bar code reader, also called a bar code scanner: Is an optical reader that uses laser beams to read bar codes. 3. A QR code (quick response code): Is known as a 2-D bar code because it stores information in both a vertical and horizontal direction in a square-shaped graphic. 4. RFID (radio frequency identification): Is a technology that uses radio signals to communicate with a tag placed in or attached to an object, an animal, or a person. 5. A magstripe reader, short for magnetic stripe card reader: Reads the magnetic stripe on the back of credit cards, entertainment cards, bank cards, identification cards, and other similar cards. 6. An MICR (magnetic-ink character recognition): Device reads text printed with magnetized ink. A data collection device obtains data directly at the location where the transaction or event takes place. © 2022 Cengage Learning®.
