DENTAL HYGIENE & DENTAL THERAPY Tooth Morphology Workbook 1 Teamwork Improving Kindness Safety Student name: DENTAL HYGIENE & DENTAL THERAPY This handbook is to be used in conjunction with your sessions on Dentitions/Tooth Morphology. You will need to complete the workbook to meet the intended learning outcomes: By the end of this session students should be able to: Recognise the basic structure of a tooth and it’s surrounding tissues List the functions of the teeth Revise the various dental notations of primary and secondary teeth used clinically Describe the terminology used in tooth morphology in order to recognise various landmarks on the tooth surface Structure of tooth DENTAL HYGIENE & DENTAL THERAPY Structure Location Describe the structure What is it’s function? Dentine Found in the space between the root and the bony socket A tough fibrous layer of connective tissue covering the bone of the upper and lower jaws. Enamel Found covering the root Embedded within the dentine walls. Label the diagram of the tooth parts using the following: DENTAL HYGIENE & DENTAL THERAPY Neck Gingivae Root Pulp chamber Periodontal ligament Root canal Enamel Dentine Cementum Alveolar bone Crown DENTAL HYGIENE & DENTAL THERAPY DENTAL HYGIENE & DENTAL THERAPY Dental Terminology- please complete the blanks. Continue to add to this as you come across new words. ? The physical wearing away of tooth substance Alignment To arrange in a ? Alveolar process The bone of the maxilla and ? that supports the teeth ? The tip of the root Apical foramen Opening at the ? , through which blood, nerve and lymph pass Atrophy The ? away of tissue ? Wearing down of the occlusal an incisal surfaces through use Bifurcation The point at which two ? divide ? The third tooth from the midline, used for gripping ? Pertaining to the neck of the tooth ? Lingual or palatal lobe found on incisor teeth Cusp A peak on the ? surfaces of teeth Cusp of Carabelli An extra ? found on the mesio-palatal surface of first maxillary permanent molars in 50-75% of people DENTAL HYGIENE & DENTAL THERAPY ? Where two teeth meet to form an interproximal area ? Old term for ? dentition Developmental ? Linear indentations which divide the cusps. Formed during the development of the crown Diastema Spacing between the teeth, most commonly seen between the upper central ? Disto-incisal angle The point where the ? and incisal edges meet Embrasure (Spillway) The space formed where teeth diverge from the ? Eminence General term for a protuberance or bulge ? Process where teeth appear through the gingivae to take their place in the mouth Fissure A fault caused through the imperfect joining of the developmental lobes- found usually on ? or buccal surfaces Fossa A shallow depression ? A small opening through which pass blood and nerve vessels Pulp ? A projection of pulp towards the cusp or incisal edge ? First and second teeth from the midline. Used for cutting Incisal edge Biting edge of the ? ? The space between the contact areas and the interdental bone DENTAL HYGIENE & DENTAL THERAPY Labial Pertaining to the ? Lingual Pertaining to the ? Malocclusion Abnormal ? of the teeth ? Rounded protuberances on newly erupted teeth Marginal ? Enamel ridges at the mesial and distal edges of the teeth ? Act of chewing ? The point where the mesial and incisal edges meet ? The sixth, seventh and eighth permanent tooth from the midline Oblique ridge A ridge that runs obliquely across the occlusal surfaces of maxillary molars ? The biting surface Occlusion Relationship of upper and lower teeth when jaws are ? together ? Pertaining to the palate Periodontal Surrounding the ? ? A small pointed depression found at the junction of two or more developmental grooves Pulp Vital part of the tooth contained in the ? DENTAL HYGIENE & DENTAL THERAPY Ridge A linear elevation on the surface of a tooth Root trunk The part of the root between the cervix and the point of ? of the roots Transverse ridge Ridge that descends from the cusp tip to the central part of the occlusal surface ? Point of division of ? roots Tubercle Rounded elevation on the surface of the crown. Often a deviation from the norm DENTAL HYGIENE & DENTAL THERAPY Fill the spaces to denote the correct notation: For Palmer notation you may use UR, LL etc. Tooth type Palmer notation FDI notation Primary mandibular right first molar Permanent maxillary left lateral incisor Secondary mandibular left second premolar Primary maxillary right second incisor Deciduous maxillary left second molar Secondary mandibular right third molar Permanent maxillary left first molar
