Group 4 : Science Good morning krub To differentiate windward and leeward sides of a high land WHAT IS THE WINDWARD SIDE? THE WINDWARD SIDE OF A MOUNTAIN RANGE IS WETTER AND COOLER THAN THE LEEWARD SIDE BECAUSE THE WIND FORCES AIR TO RISE, WHICH COOLS AND CONDENSES INTO CLOUDS AND PRECIPITATION. THIS PROCESS IS CALLED ADIABATIC COOLING. WHAT IS ADIABATIC COOLING? ADIABATIC COOLING IS A PROCESS THAT USES A CHANGE IN AIR PRESSURE TO REDUCE HEAT. IT'S A TYPE OF EVAPORATIVE COOLING THAT'S EFFECTIVE IN HOT, DRY ENVIRONMENTS. IT IS SUBJECT TO CONSISTENT WINDS THAT BLOW COOL, MOIST AIR UPWARD. AS THIS AIR IS LIFTED, DUE TO A DECREASE IN ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE, IT BEGINS TO COOL (SCIENTIFICALLY CALLED ADIABATIC COOLING). COOLER AIR IS NOT ABLE TO HOLD AS MUCH WATER VAPOR AS WARM AIR, SO AT SOME POINT THE MOISTURE IN THE AIR BEGINS TO CONDENSE AND CLOUDS FORM. RAIN To differentiate windward and leeward sides of a high land WHAT IS THE LEEWARD SIDE THE LEEWARD SIDE OF A MOUNTAIN RANGE IS DRIER AND WARMER THAN THE WINDWARD SIDE BECAUSE THE AIR SINKS AND WARMS AS IT DESCENDS. THIS PROCESS IS CALLED ADIABATIC WARMING. THE LEEWARD SIDE IS ALSO KNOWN AS BEING IN A RAIN SHADOW. WHAT IS ADIABATIC WARMING? ADIABATIC WARMING IS THE PROCESS BY WHICH AIR WARMS UP WHEN IT IS COMPRESSED WITHOUT EXCHANGING HEAT WITH THE SURROUNDING AIR. AS CONDENSATION OCCURS, IT RELEASES HEAT INTO THE SURROUNDING AIR. THIS EFFECT IS CALLED LATENT HEAT OF CONDENSATION. BY THE TIME THE AIR DESCENDS DOWN THE OTHER SIDE OF AN ISLAND (OR MOUNTAIN), MOST OF ITS MOISTURE HAS BEEN CONDENSED OUT. The differences in climate between the windward and leeward sides of a mountain range can lead to differences in vegetation. For example, the windward side of the Sierra Madre Mountain Range in the Philippines is lush with vegetation, while the leeward side is drier and less vegetated. How Does Topography Affect Climate? What Is Topography? -Topography describes the physical features of an area of land. These features typically include natural formations such as mountains, rivers, lakes, and valleys. -Aids in changing precipitation and temperature How Does Topography Affect Climate? The topography of an area can influence the weather and climate. Topography is the relief of an area. If an area is close to a body of water it tends to make milder climates. Mountainous areas tend to have more extreme weather because it acts as a barrier to air movements and moisture. Now let's have a quiz:) The topography of an area can influence the weather and climate. Topography is the relief of an area. If an area is close to a body of water it tends to make milder climates.
