Philosophy, Theory, Approaches, Methods, Strategies, and Techniques Benjie M. Manila, LPT, MEM, Ed.D. Assistant Professor PUP Mariveles, Bataan Campus Philosophy of Education Branch of Philosophy that addresses philosophical questions concerning the nature, aims, and problems of education (Siegel, 2010). Educational Theories An organized body of principles and recommendations directed toward those concerned with educational practice (Moore, as cited in Strike, 1975) Piaget Cognitive Development Gardner Multiple Intelligences Theory Approach A set of principles, beliefs or ideas about the nature of learning, which is translated into the classroom A teacher’s personal philosophy of teaching Teaching Approaches in the K to 12 Curriculum 1. Learner-centered- Learners as the center of educational process, Enables life-long learning and independent problem solving 2. Inclusive Education for all- Includes everyone, no one left behind 3. Developmentally Appropriate- tasks are within the developmental stage 4. Responsive and Relevant- teaching is meaningful when related to student’s life 5. Culture-sensitive- teaching should respect cultures 6. Contextualized and Global Teaching Approaches in the K to 12 Curriculum 7. Research-based- teaching and learning are anchored on researches 8. Constructivist Approach- students build upon their prior knowledge, students make their own meaning 9. Inquiry-based- learning through student-generated questions, e.g. 5Es of learning, discovery approach etc, 10. Reflective Teaching- teacher thinks over his/her teaching 11. Collaborative- Group work, teamwork, partnerships, and group discussion 12. Integrative 13. Mother tongue-Based MLE- teaching uses more language and starts in Mother Tongue Metacognitive Approach- The teaching process brings the learner to the process of thinking about thinking. The learner reflects on what he learned and on his/her ways of learning. Teaching Method -A set of orderly, logically-arranged steps in teaching -Procedural Teaching Method Inductive Deductive -Specific to -General to General Specific Teaching Methods -Preliminaries (Review, Checking of Assignments, Motivation), Procedure (Presentation/ Concept Formation, Activities), Generalization, Assessment -Lecture -Explicit Instruction (I do, We do, You do) -5 E’s of Learning (Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate and Evaluate) Teaching Strategies -a method of approaching the task of teaching, mode of operation to achieve a goal -requires some sort of planning (what to do in each step of a teaching method) -Example: In Explicit Instruction (Using the Microscope) ◦ I do: Introduce the lesson, Importance, Do a demonstration on how to use the Microscope) ◦ We do: Groupings, Let students practice using the microscope, Give a specimen and let the students describe what they see using the microscope (Drawing) ◦ You do: Practicum (Identification of Specimen) Teaching Strategy -Field trip -Role Play -Debate -Think-Pair-Share -Jigsaw Puzzle (Used in Collaborative Teaching) Group 1 Group 2 Group 3 Mother Groups- each with 5 members Reuse Reduce Recycle Refuse Recover 1 2 3 4 5 Teaching Technique -a teacher’s personal style or trick to accomplish the task of teaching -the implementation that which actually takes place in a classroom. -tricks that can be taught to another teacher -how to check the attendance, classroom management, how to check the assignment, how groupings are organized -Examples: System of rewards and punishments, if a classroom become distracted a teacher may use the technique of silent reading, a quick physical activity to distract or divert their attendtion Siegel, H.
