Beavers are important to nature. They dam streams and rivers. This creates ponds that let plants and animals thrive. Before colonization, beavers were found everywhere in Massachusetts. Beaver fur was very popular. It was used to make hats and other items. Colonists could make a lot of money selling fur. Plymouth colonists trapped many beavers. The fur trade was a big business. Before the 1600s, there were 100-200 million beavers in North America. Today there are 10-15 million beavers. In the early 1900s, people began to help bring back beavers in New England.
