Summary

Molecular models are constructed to visualise the shape and structure of molecules. This document explores molecular models with and without lone pairs. Students are instructed to prepare a final report, including labelled pictures of the created models.

THE MOLECULAR MODELS THAT YOU PREPARED ARE FOR MOLECULES WITH NO LONE PAIRS. WHAT ABOUT MOLECULES WITH LONE PAIRS? SIMPLY REMOVE ONE OR TWO COTTON BUDS FROM THE MODELS YOU HAVE PREPARED AS SHOWN BELOW Remove one of the horizontal bonds in the trigonal bipyramidal molecule to come up with seesaw shape. Remove two of the horizontal bonds in the trigonal bipyramidal molecule have T-shaped molecule. Remove three of the horizontal bonds in the trigonal bipyramidal molecule have linear molecule. Remove one of the vertical bonds (at the bottom) of octahedral molecule have square pyramidal molecule. Remove two of the vertical bonds (top and bottom) of octahedral molecule have square planar molecule. After constructing all the molecular models, prepare your final report. Your final report must contain the pictures of all the molecular models (with and without lone pairs). Each of the pictures must be labelled with electron pair geometry, molecular geometry and bond angles. The cover of your report must show your picture together with your models.
