Spe e c h STY L E S MARTIN JOOS Communicative Style refers to the form of language that the speaker utilizes which is characterized by the level of formality or informality. INTIMATE STYLE When the communication is intimate, it is private and you usually do this with family members, close friends, or your partner. More so, grammar and word choice are not given importance. CASUAL STYLE This style is common among peers and friends. Jargon, slang, or the vernacular languages are used. CONSULTATIVE STYLE Consultative style is used in semi-formal communication. It exhibits interest in conferring with other people on a specific topic. CONSULTATIVE STYLE Teacher: “Hi Dave, are you ready for the exam next week?” Student: “No sir, I will start from tomorrow onward.” Teacher: Your grades are low last grading, why start tomorrow if you could start today. Is there something wrong? Student: Actually, Ma’am. I find English subject a little too tough for me. Teacher: why haven’t you told me this before? I would have helped you. Come to my office after class and I will teach you. Student: Thank you, Ma’am. FORMAL STYLE This style is being done formally. The language use in this style is rigid and has structured sentences and avoids slang terminologies. This is done usually in meetings, State of the Nation Address of the President, or formal speeches, letters, and news report.
