Recap! What Are Clauses? Sentences are made up of clauses. Clauses need to have a subject and a verb. I play basketball i after school. What is the subject and what is the verb? ‘I’ is the subject and ‘play’ is the verb. This is an independent or main clause, meaning the i sentence makes sense by itself. It is a simple sentence. Clauses Sentences are made up of clauses. although I am not i as good as my friends. This is a subordinate or dependent clause,i meaning that is doesn’t make sense on its own. Clauses Let’s look at this in more detail. I play basketball after school, although I i am not as good as my friends. Adding an independent (or main) clause to a dependent (or subordinate) clause creates a i complex sentence; we find out a bit more detail about the subject, in this case how well they play. Task Find five independent clauses: 1. the classroom nearest the fire exit 2. My mum goes swimming every week. 3. They walked home by themselves. 4. because the rules said so 5. Tom loves this band. 6. Cats eat fish. 7. but they are younger than me 8. the best netball player in school 9.
