George Wells [Gibson MS] Civil War Timeline From Apr 12, 1861 to May 9, 1865 what once was an inseparable America battle each other over the rights of slaves. The Union believing they should be free and the newly established Confederacy believing in slavery. Nov 6, 1860 Lincoln becomes President Abraham Lincoln was America's 16th president, an abolitionist, and first republican president. He was president during the Civil War and was the President to declare war after South Carolina seceded from America. In the midst of the war Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation which officially, on paper, freed all slaves. Unfortunately Lincoln was assassinated on April 14th, 1865. April 11, 1861 Fort Sumter Fort Sumter is were the first shots of the Civil War occurred. The shots were fired after Lincoln attempted to resupply the fort, which was in a confederate state. The confederate General was behind the plan of attack on the fort and the battle ended the next day April 12, 1861 with the Confederates winning Fort Sumter. April 1861 Anaconda Plan The plan was created by General Scott who's plan was to defeat the confederacy by blockading southern ports and controlling the Mississippi river. Aug 5, 1861 Income Tax President Lincoln created the first income tax on annual income over $800. This new tax was used to help pay from the war. Only 3% was taken for tax. May 20, 1862, Homestead Act President Lincoln enacted the Homestead Act to Novemebr 6, 1861 Jefferson Davis becomes President Davis was elected as president of the confederate states. Since the southern states seceded from the union they elected Davis president for a six-year term and remained president until May 5, 1865. It's purpose was to free all slaves in America stating that all slave "shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free." This document switched the main focus of "preserving the union" to fighting for the freedom of slaves. Jul 1, 1863 Battle of Gettysburg The battle of Gettysburg was a fight between the North and South and is regarded as the one of the biggest battles of Civil War. The battle had 85,000 men from the union that fought Robert Lee's army of 75,000 men. This battle is also regarded as the turning point for the North because their advantage of army size. May 28, 1863 Massachusetts 54th regiment Although free in the North and for the most considered citizens African-Americans could not serve in the military. Thus in February 1863 Governor John A. Andrew called for a volunteer group of African-Americans. More than 1,000 men ended up volunteering from many different states in the North. This group of men were known as the 54th infantry and was the first troop of African-American soldiers in the Civil War. November 1863 Gettysburg Address This is the event in which at the National Cemetery of Gettysburg Lincoln delivers on of the best American speeches in less than 300 words. In his speech Lincoln reminds the union why it is imperative that they win the war.
