Name:\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_ Date:\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_ Block:\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_ **Chemical Formulas PhET Simulation** **Directions:** Go to the PhET simulator linked in Schoology, or use this website: t.ly/KiAc to follow the steps below. 1. Before you get started, you should know the difference between an element and a compound and how to draw particle diagrams of elements and compounds. If you don't know these things, stop, take a break and find out. Then come back when you are ready. 2. Open the website and click to get started. On the screen at the bottom, you'll see some bowls of atoms. On the right, you'll see a list of molecules you must make. To get to other bowls of atoms, click the arrows on either side of the white box holding the bowls. Use the atoms to make the molecules and fill out the chart below. Chemical Formula H~2~O O~2~ H~2~ CO~2~ N~2~ ----------------------------- ----------------------- ------ ------ ------- ------ Number and kind of elements 2 H + 1 O Draw it! ![](media/image2.png) Element or Compound? E C E C E C E C E C 3. Excellent! Now click for this next part. It looks pretty much the same but there is something different about the chemical formulas. What is different about the chemical formulas you see on this page? 4. Just like we did previously, lets fill out this chart. But there are some extra rows this time! Chemical Formula 2CO~2~ 2O~2~ 4H~2~ 2NH~3~ --------------------------------------------- ----------------------- ------- ------- -------- Number and kind of elements in ONE molecule 1 C + 2 O Number of molecules 2 TOTAL number and kind of elements needed 2 C and 4 O Draw it! ![](media/image5.png) Element or Compound? E C E C E C E C 5. Good job! You're almost finished! For this last part, click on and fill out the chart below. This time, you need to fill in the MISSING information. You might need to click to find the right set of bowls. +-------------+-------------+-------------+-------------+-------------+ | Chemical | CCl~4~ + | | | | | Formula(s) | 2H~2~ | | | | +=============+=============+=============+=============+=============+ | Number and | C + 4 Cl | | | 4 H + 2 C | | kind of | | | | | | elements in | 2 H | | | \+ 3 O | | EACH | | | | | | molecule | | | | | +-------------+-------------+-------------+-------------+-------------+ | Number of | 2 | | 2 | | | TYPES of | | | | | | molecules | | | | | +-------------+-------------+-------------+-------------+-------------+ | TOTAL | 3 | | 5 | | | number of | | | | | | molecules | | | | | +-------------+-------------+-------------+-------------+-------------+ | TOTAL | 1 C, 4 Cl, | | | | | number and | and 4 H | | | | | kind of | | | | | | elements | | | | | | needed | | | | | +-------------+-------------+-------------+-------------+-------------+ | Draw it! | ![](media/i | | | | | | mage7.png) | | | | +-------------+-------------+-------------+-------------+-------------+ | Element, | E C M | E C M | E C M | E C M | | Compound, | | | | | | or Mixture? | | | | | +-------------+-------------+-------------+-------------+-------------+ | What is in | A compound | | Two | | | the | and an | | elements | | | mixture? | element | | | | +-------------+-------------+-------------+-------------+-------------+ 6. Summing it up: a. What do the little numbers (subscripts) mean? b. What do the big numbers in front (coefficients) mean? c. How do you know which element the little number (subscript) goes with? d. 2CH~4~ and C~2~H~8~ have the same number and kind of elements. How are they different? e. We couldn't make compounds that have parenthesis in them, like this one: Al(OH)~3~. What do you think the make up of this compound is? Fill out its chart below. Chemical Formula Number and kind of elements Draw it! ------------------ ----------------------------- ---------- Al(OH)~3~
