# **Physical Self** ## **Western Mindanao State University** ### What Part of Your Body Do You Like the Least? ### What Part of Your Body Do You Like the Most? ## **The Physical Self** The physical self refers to the tangible aspect of the individual, the one with figure, _the one that can be seen and touched_ and the one that feels pain. ## **Origins of Perfection** In ancient Greece, it was the Greek sculptor Polyclutus who was the first artist to devise a canon for the human body with the idea that certain proportions would operate as a model of perfection. The human head forms a Golden Rectangle with the eyes at the mid-point. The mouth and nose can each be placed at Golden Sections of the distance between the eyes and the bottom of the chin. With this information, it is possible to construct a human face with dimensions exhibiting the Golden Ratio. This is exactly how some modern surgeons are creating beauty. **The image is a diagram showing how the golden ratio is used for beauty.** ## **Body Image** Body Image is how you think and feel about your body. Adolescents' body image include the following: - Perception of their physical self when they look in the mirror. - Feelings of likes or dislikes about the physical self that they see. - Their thoughts and how they relate to their physical self. - Perception of how other people view them physically. ## **Media** We've long understood that movies, magazines and television damage teens' body image by enforcing a "thin ideal." Social media has also become a toxic mirror. Visual platforms like Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat deliver tools that allow users to earn approval for their appearance and compare themselves to others. Thanks to an array of free applications, selfie-holics now have the power to alter their bodies in pictures in a way that's practically at par with makeup and other beauty products. ## **Body Image Statistics** - 80% of women say that the images of women on television and in movies, fashion magazines, and advertising makes them feel insecure. - 42% of girls first through third grades want to be thinner. ## **Selfie Stats** **Do you compare your body to images you see in the media?** - Yes - **Women** 87.73% | **Men** 65.37% - No - **Women** 12.27% | **Men** 36.63% **Does your body compare favorably or unfavorably to images in the media?** **Women** | **Men** --- | --- It compares favorably - 12.93% | 21.96% It compares unfavorably - 50.57% | 36.95% I go back and forth on this... - 28.81% | 28.42% I'm not sure - 7.69% | 12.66% ## **Who's the Fairest of Them All, Not Using Instagram Filters?** **The image is a cartoon featuring a princess looking in a mirror.** ## **Breast Implant Profiles** - **Low Profile** - Impiant - _Natural_ - **Moderate Profile** - Impiant - _Natural_ - **Moderate Plus Profile** - Impiant - _Natural_ - **High Profile Implant** - _Natural_ - **Ultra-high and Very High Profiles** - _Augmented_ ## **Male Beauty** ### **Male Beautimometer Scale (Based on MU 1000 BC's Beautimometer Scale)** **GOD** | --- | Major god | Full god | Minor god | Demigod | **Super Handsome** | --- | Mega handsome | Super handsome | Lower super handsome | **Middle-class handsome** | --- | Pretty handsome | Average handsome | Okayish handsome | **Plain** | --- | Fair | Not bad | Plain | **Ugly** | --- | Ugly | Very ugly | Horrible | ## **Metrosexuality** Indeed, the term "METROSEXUALITY" has been coined to describe a type of man, usually located within a metropolitan setting, who devotes a lot of time to beautifying his body and spending considerable amounts of money on contemporary fashion. ## **Body Dysmorphic Disorder** Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) is a serious mental health condition characterized by a preoccupation with one or more flaws in appearance. These flaws are often minor or even non-existent, leading some to call BDD 'imagined ugliness'. ## **Body Shaming** Body-shaming (criticizing yourself or others because of some aspect of physical appearance) can lead to a vicious cycle of judgment and criticism. Messages from the media and from each other often imply that we should want to change, that we should care about looking slimmer, smaller, and tanner. Body-shaming manifests in many ways: 1) Criticizing your own appearance, through a judgment or comparison to another person. 2) Criticizing another's appearance in front of them. 3) Criticizing another's appearance without their knowledge. ## **Body Image, Self Esteem and Mental Health** The image is a diagram displaying a progression from **Body Image** -> **Self-Esteem** -> **Mental Health**. ## **On a Final Note...** It is a big mistake to base beauty on someone else's standard. People are different and each one is uniquely beautiful. **The image is a cartoon of a woman with text that says, "Whatever! I'm always gorgeous." ** ## **Thanks** "It is only with the heart that one can see rightly. What is essential is-invisible to the eye." **The image is a cartoon of a young man standing in front of a crescent with a star background. He holds a small yellow star with his hand.**
