Understand the significance of protecting the environment. Develop awareness of the debilitating effects of catastrophic events that may happen because of an indifferent attitude to environmental conservation and protection. Enhance their sensitivity and deep concern to protect the environment. Actively involve themselves in any projects and activities geared toward Environmental Protection and preservation. Life is lived in only one world, and the world is as important as life Saving the world and its physical structure, the environment, is ought to be a personal and moral battle every person must engage in Humans hold the key to some viable solutions confronting the problems of the world’s survival Thus, AWARENESS and PROTECTION of the environment needs immediate understanding and attention https://blog.checkpoint.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/earth-day-2024-blog-banner-800x4 Common Environmental Problems 1. CLIMATE CHANGE Most pressing environmental issue in the world. The extreme and changing weather conditions resulted to the following: rising temperature, damaging typhoons, El Nino (causing severe drought), and La Nina ( heavy downpours resulting to floods and landslide). The Presidential Task Force’s Solution: 1. Consumers may do their share through climate -friendly energy supply mix, energy generation and energy efficiency adaptation. 2. Policy incentives for renewable energy schemes and climate-friendly technologies must be made 3. Subsidies for lowering costs for power generation using solar, wind, and any other nature-based related technologies must be given. Common Environmental Problems 2. DEFORESTATION the destruction of vast areas of forests through unsustainable forestry practices, agricultural and rangeland clearing, and the over exploitation of wood products for use as fuel without planting for new growth. Caused by illegal logging and mining 3. WASTE MANAGEMENT Linked to the problems of consumption and rapidly growing population. resulting to larger amount of waste generated. Educating the population on proper waste disposal, such as garbage segregation, is a long-term solution. Also, the shift from reuse or recycle method is a viable solution. Common Environmental Problems 3. WATER SCARCITY Water is the primary and most consumed commodity in the world. As of this date, only 2% of the water available on the planet is pure and fit for human consumption. Too much of water or too little of it both cause a problem. Includes the concern on safe and potable water ECOSYSTEM AND ENDANGERED SPECIES Ecological system or ecosystem refers to functional units that result from interactions of a biotic (air, water, rocks and energy, biotic (plants, animals and microorganisms), and cultural (anthropogenic components). The ecosystem is made-up of many smaller ecosystems interlocked through cycles of energy and chemical elements. The flow of energy and matters through ecosystems, therefore, is regulated by the complex interactions of various elements found in nature. Endangered species refers to a population of organisms which is at risk of becoming extinct because it is either few in number or threatened by changing environmental or predation parameters. https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.pngwing.com%2Fen%2Fsearch%3Fq%3Denvironmental%2BLogos%2BCliparts&psig=AOvVaw2lbLcPkypzcux- PERTINENT LAWS THAT SUPPORT ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS Executive Order 579 Signed on November 30, 2006 by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. Aims to encourage the formulation and implementation of Green Philippines program. Specifically citing the significant role of the National Service Training Program. https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.scclegal.com%2Fenvironmental-law-and-regulation-expert- insights%2F&psig=AOvVaw3VGuexsfhRHOrH50ua9v39&ust=1728087680431000&source=images&cd=vfe&opi=89978449&ved=0CBQQjRx qFwoTCKCovfyR9YgDFQAAAAAdAAAAABAE PERTINENT LAWS Executive Order 579 Go green Philippines is a sustainable environmental program which primarily aims to revitalize the Philippine ecosystem. Specifically, it focuses on the preservation of natural resources of the Philippines through a threefold objective: 1. RECYCLE natural components to ensure continuing natural resources. 2. REPLENISH what is used to use what has been replenished. 3. REVITALIZE nature and breathe new life to the communities. PERTINENT LAWS Executive Order 579 Section 1 of Executive Order 579 mandates the NSTP participants to build a new quality of life that will keep the nation young and beautiful. To ensure its realization, all students under NSTP (ROTC,LTS, and CWTS) shall be involved in Go Green Philippines activities: Taking back our forests and replenishing fallen trees with worried forest. Beautifying our barangays and cities. Building more urban parks and recreation areas. Purifying our water. Cleaning up industrial sites PERTINENT LAWS Republic Act 9512 Signed into law on December 12, 2008, by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo The National Environmental Awareness and Education Act of 2008 (RA 9512) called on various departments of the government to integrate environmental education in its school curricula. Environmental Education encompass the following precepts and principles. 1. Environmental loss 2. The state of international and local environment 3. The local environmental best practices. 4. The threats of environment degradation and the impact on human well-being. 5. The responsibility of the citizenry to the environment. 6. The value of conservation, protection and rehabilitation of natural resources and the environment in the context of sustainable development. PERTINENT LAWS Republic Act 9512 The law in Section 4 explicitly cited the inclusion of the environmental education. An awareness programs and activities in the NTSP under Republic Act number 9163, as part of the Civic Welfare Training Service component. In all bacalaureate degree programs and vocational courses with the curriculum of at least two year years under the Ched Testa respectively. Pursuant to Republic Act 9512, the month of November is declared as an Environmental Awareness Month throughout the Philippines PERTINENT LAWS Republic Act 10121 Signed on May in 2010 by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. Aims to strengthen the Philippines’ Disaster Risk Reduction and Management system, providing for the National Disaster Risk. Reduction and Management Framework and institutionalizing the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Plan, appropriating funds therefore for other purposes. ROLE OF THE YOUTH IN PROTECTING OUR ENVIRONMENT 1. Be an advocate Join organizations and school clubs with service – oriented activities ( clean-up drive, beautification, coastal clean etc.) 2. Practice the three Rs Reduce, Reuse and Recycle 3. Patronize Sustainable Products Use of resources made of eco-friendly materials 4. Improve Purchasing Habits Buy only what you need to avoid waste and irresponsible consumption https://www.istockphoto.com/photo/close-up-of-children-holding-a-planet-at-the-beach-gm1435661969-476936528 ROLE OF THE YOUTH IN PROTECTING OUR ENVIRONMENT 5. Plant a Tree Help decrease greenhouse gas pollution 6. Save Energy Help conserve energy to preserve the natural resources 7. Be a Vegetarian Lessen meat and dairy consumption because livestock releases large amounts of methane into the atmosphere, which is the most potent gases that can affect climate and lead to global warming. https://www.istockphoto.com/photo/close-up-of-children-holding-a-planet-at-the-beach-gm1435661969-476936528 Reference: Espiritu, R., Co, M., Guevarra, K., Venturina, G., & Aggabao, A.
