CHAPTER FIVE SHOCK By Obsan R(BSc,MPH/RH) Oct/2021 Harambe/ Learning Objectives 1. Define shock 2. Identify different causes of shock 3. Explain signs and symptoms of shock 4. Describe first aid measures of shock 1 Definition of shock A condition resulting from a depressed state of many vital body functions due to decreased tissue perfusion It is a condition that could threaten life Can be reversible or irreversible Can be classified as Cardiogenic shock, Distributive shock, Traumatic shock, electrical shock, insulin shock, hypovolemic shock etc. 2 Definition and Classification 1. Hypovolemic shock : result from loss of circulating volume from hemorrhage  It is common cause of shock in trauma/surgical patients  Can be Hemorrhagic or non-hemorrhagic 3 2. Cardiogenic shock Is a circulatory pump failure leading to diminished forward flow and subsequent tissue hypoxia. Mortality is up to 50-80% Common cause is MI 4 3.Vasodilatory Shock (Septic Shock) Itis hypotension results from failure of the vascular smooth muscle to constrict appropriately  Most frequently encountered form of vasodilatory shock is septic shock 5 Septic Shock------------ INFECTION : BACTEREMIA: presence of viable bacteria in the blood SIRS (Systemic inflammatory response syndrome) is the systemic inflammatory response to a wide variety of severe clinical manifests by 2 or more of (Temp>38°C or less than 36°C, pulse rate> 90bpm) Etc 6 Septic Shock----------- Sepsis-induced hypotension (i.e. systolic blood pressure
