Discuss the 4 major attributes of human being 2. Explain the different nursing concepts of man 3. Discuss the basic need of man A. THE ATOMISTIC APPROACH ▪ We need to know the structure of the human body B. THE HOLISTIC APPROACH ▪ Provides a framework on which one can base his perception or observation of the total behavior of man in relation to society 4 Major Attributes of Human Being 1. The capacity to think or conceptualize on the abstract level. 4 Major Attributes of Human Being 2. Family formation 4 Major Attributes of Human Being 3. Tendency to see and maintain territory 4 Major Attributes of Human Being 4. The ability to use verbal symbols as language, means of developing and maintaining culture. NURSING CONCEPT OF MAN CONCEPT ▪ To be able to provide individualized, holistic, human, ethical, and quality nursing care, it is primary consideration to understand MAN. 1. MAN as a Biological Being ▪ Composed of 2 Systems: a. Subordinate System: Found inside Man. It is an open system in constant interaction with a changing environment (Roy) b. Super ordinate System: Found outside Man is a society and community 2. MAN as a unified whole rather than a set of integral parts (Rogers) ▪ Man as a unified whole is composed of parts which are interrelated and interdependent with each other (Rogers) ▪ The different organs and organ systems function together to achieve particular purpose 3. MAN as a unified whole is different and more than the mere sum of his parts (Rogers) ▪ Man is composed of parts which are greater than and different from the sum of all his parts (Rogers) 4. MAN is composed of subsystem and suprasystem (Rogers) a. Man’s subsystem: cells, tissues, organs and organ system b. Man’s suprasystem: family, community and society ▪ All of these subsystems and suprasystems affect man as a whole 5. MAN is a unity ▪ Man can be viewed as functioning biologically, symbolically and socially, and who initiates and performs self- care activities on her own behalf maintaining life and well- being (Orem) 6. MAN is like all man, MAN is like some man, and MAN is no other man a. Man is like all man in terms of: ▪ Anatomical Structure ▪ Man is whole, complete and independent being who has 14 Fundamental Needs (Henderson) b. Man is like some man: ▪ Interests ▪ Hobbies ▪ Beliefs ▪ Religion ▪ Culture ▪ Gender ▪ Race and Color ▪ Profession ▪ Body Structure c. Man is no other man: ▪ Each one of us has different trait personalities that make us a UNIQUE individual 7. MAN is a Biopsychological and Spiritual Being who is in constant contact with the environment (Roy) a. Man as a Biopsychosocial being: ▪ Is irreplaceable ▪ Is alike and unlike other being ▪ Make life meaningful ▪ Has differences, never think alike ▪ Will never be able to understand another man b. Man as a Spiritual being: ▪ All men are spiritual in nature ▪ Believes that there’s someone greater than him and his universe ▪ All men are endowed with 3 Great Virtues: FAITH, HOPE and CHARITY 8. MAN is an individual with vital reparative process ▪ To deal with disease and desirous of health but passive in terms of influencing the environment or nurse (Nightingale) Thank you!
