Overview of Information Technology This lesson gives an overview of how the information technology affects the business operations of the tourism and hospitality businesses. OVERVIEW OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY Tourism industry today is changing significantly with the application of information technology in its fundamental to strategic activity. These changes are driven by the competition inherent within the industry as well as the evolving innovative ideas and practices. OVERVIEW OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY Information Technology as played an important role in the hospitality and tourism industry over the last decade. INTERNET AND MARKETING The internet has a powerful impact on hospitality and tourism. A customer’s first experience with your business is a visit to your website. This includes looking at pictures and reviews from past guests. COMPUTER SYSTEM Computer systems allow communication between larger hotel chains with multiple locations to connect easier. They also help keep staff on the same page and make it easier to access information, making your guests experience much better. MOBILE COMMUNICATION Mobile tablets and smartphones have replaced large desktop computers, making them virtually extinct. This is helpful, because many travelers take some type of mobile device with them on a trip. TECHNOLOGY USE The use of technology in the hospitality and tourism industry has helped speed up operations and helped the traveling process much more enjoyable and efficient. Technology not only helps large chain hotels, but can also be useful to B and B’s and other smaller companies in the industry. Business management tools are all the systems, applications, controls, calculating solutions, methodologies, etc. used by organizations to be able to cope with changing markets, ensure a competitive position in them and improve business performance. And facts are needed as this is served as the confirmation or validation of an event or object. Zappos BASIC CONCEPTS Management Information Systems (MIS) It deals with the planning for development, management, and use of information technology tools to help people perform all tasks related to information processing and management. BASIC CONCEPTS Management Information Systems (MIS) It also refers to the study of people, technology, organizations and the relationships between them. It is actually a people-oriented field with an emphasis on service through technology. MIS may also represent the approach of a company which is used to collate information necessary in making business decisions. BASIC CONCEPTS Information Technology (IT) It involves the development, maintenance, and use of computer systems, software, and networks for the processing and distribution of data. Management uses IT to store, retrieve, transmit, and even manipulate data. BASIC CONCEPTS Information Technology (IT) It has been said that the purpose of information systems is to get the right information to the right people at the right time in the right amount and in the right format. BASIC CONCEPTS Data Items It refers to an elementary description of things, events, activities, and transactions that are recorded, classified, and stored but not organized to convey any specific meaning. Data are raw facts or observations and are objective measurements of the attributes of entities. BASIC CONCEPTS Information It refers to data that have been organized so that they have meaning and value to the recipient. The recipient interprets the meaning and draws conclusions and implications from the information. SYSTEM is a set of interrelated components, with a clearly defined boundary, working together to achieve a common set of objectives by accepting inputs and producing outputs in an organized transformation process. 5 BASIC FUNCTIONS OF SYSTEM 1. Input - involves capturing and assembling elements that enter the system to be processed. 2. Process - involves transformation process that convert input into output. 3. Output - involves transferring elements that have been produced by a transformation process to their ultimate destination. 5 BASIC FUNCTIONS OF SYSTEM 4. Storage – information activity in which data are retained in an organized manner for later use. 5. Control - produces feedback about its input, processing, output, and storage activities.
