Roman Empire + Religion -Were religious people did not impose beliefs on others -Freedom of worship was often allowed when the Romans conquered others - Beliefs often spread to the Romans - adopted many of the Olympian gods of Greece although they gave them different names -only banned a religion when it was considered a political problem by Roman rulers - Judaism - Romans did not ban or restrict it until they rebelled against the Romans -Emperor Hadrian decided to end the rebellion once and for all—> he destroyed Jerusalem in 135 and forced any survivors out. Built a new city on the ruins and forbid any Jewish people from entering the city more than once a year. A new religion called Christianity appeared in Judea. It was based on the teachings and life of Jesus of Mazareth. Although it was rooted in the ideas and traditions of Judaism, it developed a separate faith. -Messiah—-> was believed to be a descendant of King David and though to be the new leader capable of restoring King Davids's greatness “Gods Anointed one” -Jesus of Nazareth -believed to be the Jewish Messiah -Christian Bible- Holy book of the Christian religion - 2 parts - Old Testament - Similar to the Hebrew Bible - New Testament - accounts of the life and teachings of Jesus and early history of christianity. -According to New Testament Jesus was born in Bethlehem -Marked the shit from bc to ad -Christians believe god, not Joseph was Jesus’s father - around 30, Jesus began to travel and teach about Christianity - his teachings challenged political authority -was arrested by Roman leaders and was killed by crucifixion- execution when a person is nailed to a cross - Christians refer to Jesus’s rise from the dead as the Resurrection ( 3 days after death) - Apostles- were 12 disciples Jesus chose to receive special training – Paul of Tarsus- the most important figure in the spread of Christianity after the death of Jesus -Growth of Christianity -Christians trying to spread Christianity faced challenges -faced persecution by roman emperors who feared unrest - Constantine- Emperor who became a christian removed bans on the religion -Become official religion of Rome
