All rights reserved Introduction to Multimedia The word multi and media are combined to form the word multimedia. The word “multi” signifies “many.” “Media” means Any way of communication. Multimedia is a type of medium that allows information to be easily transferred from one location to another. Multimedia is a combination of text, art, sound, animation, and video. The user receives it through digitally modified or electronic ways. A multimedia project development requires creative, technical, organizational, and business skills. © 2011 The McGraw-Hill Companies, Inc. All rights reserved Introduction to Multimedia (continued) Categories of Multimedia:  Linear Multimedia It is also called Non-interactive multimedia. In the case of linear multimedia, the end-user cannot control the content of the application. User is a observer of information. A linear multimedia application lacks all the features with the help of which, a user can interact with the application such as the ability to choose different options, click on icons, control the flow of the media, or change the pace at which the media is displayed. All rights reserved Introduction to Multimedia (continued) Categories of Multimedia:  Non-Linear Multimedia (Interactive multimedia) In Non-Linear multimedia, the end-user is allowed the navigational control to rove through multimedia content at his own desire. User is the participant of flow of information. The application's access can be managed by the user. Non-linear offers user interactivity to control the movement of data. Interactive multimedia is called hypermedia when a user is provided a structure of linked elements for navigation.
