Tracing the root of the leadership in the Church, this will go back to no other than Jesus Christ who founded a renewal movement (now the Church) within the Old Testament's people of God which will later be called Judaism. Jesus did not totally renew how the [salvific mission of God to humanity was being carried out] which goes back to the roles of the [prophets, priests, and kings] of the Old Testament, but just shown how these ways of doing a mission should be done in a way which perfectly followed the will of the Father who sent Him. **Lesson Proper:** **A. The Three-Fold Ministry of Jesus Christ: Jesus the "perfect" Prophet, The King of all kings, and the Great High Priest** 1\. **Jesus, the "Perfect" Prophet** A [prophet] in the Old Testament is one who has the calling to be the "[mouth of God]", one who speaks on behalf of God. The term "Prophet" is from the Hebrew word "Nabi" which means "speaker" or to speak on behalf of. So, a prophet is the speaker or [mouth of God to the people]. This is why generally; these prophets always start their message to the people with an introductory word "[Thus says the Lord]......" If a prophet will give message or sermon to the people, aside from basing it on God's revelation to him, it is also based on how he reads the signs of the times and discern the message of God in the situation using the eyes of faith and his "connectivity" with God. So, a [prophet is always connected] with the [Word or Message of God]. Jesus is the [perfect] mouth of God to humanity as expressed in [John 1:14] when it says **^"^**And the [Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us], (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth." In Luke 4:24, Jesus spoke of himself as a prophet: "No prophet is accepted in his own native place". Jesus is the fullness of God's revelation to humanity. The will of God for humanity and for all His creatures is perfectly revealed through the words and actions of Jesus. [The core of that revelation or message is God's will which is the salvation or total well-being of His people, or His will to be one with His people and all His creations.] So, [J**esus**] is not just one who contains or relays the Word of God to people but He **[Himself is the WORD of God to people]**. **Note:** A prophet is NOT one who will PREDICT the future! Why? By the word "prediction", it may or it may not happen. The main function of a prophet is to speak God's words to people. The prophet can only FORECAST (not predict) a future event if God reveals it to him or by reading the signs of the times. Example: if you continue to cut more trees and no longer plant also, it will result to more natural calamities in the future. 2\. **Jesus, the King of Kings** [Kings] in the Old Testament were the ones who [led and served] the people of God. They were reminded to see to it that the people will always be faithful to their covenantal relationship with God. Despite being the kings of the Israelites, they always remember that God is still the absolute king. They are just the instruments of God in leading/serving His people. In the Old Testament, one can only become a [king] if he is [anointed by God] through the prophets. In **[Luke] [4:17-21]**[,] [Jesus is] the one sent and [anointed by God] as the [King] to establish God's kingdom on earth. During the annunciation, the angel Gabriel announced to Mary that her son Jesus will be great and will be called Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father,**^ ^**and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of [his kingdom there will be no end.]" (Luke 1:32-33) Jesus announced the kingdom of God. His mission was to have God reign in the hearts of all and to have peace and justice in the world. Jesus exercised his royal office by serving. [Jesus is the King of all the kings.] In the triumphal entry of Jesus to Jerusalem [(Luke 19: 30- 38]) this was acknowledged by the crowd when they said, [\"Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!\"] Indeed, Jesus is the King who served God and His people perfectly by [fighting for the total well-being of all people] [even to the point of death]. Just like a hero, Jesus' death would bring total well-being or liberation of people from the slavery of sin/oppressions. If the "worldly" king has his soldiers and servants who are all willing to defend and even to die just for that king to survive or live, Jesus has shown the other way around. [Jesus is the king who was willing to suffer and die just for the people to live or totally liberated.] As He demonstrated to His apostles when He washed their feet (John 13:1-17), [Jesus,] King of all kings is a [humble servant; **power and authority means love and service**] [ ] 3\. **Jesus, the Great High Priest.** A [priest] in the Old Testament is one who is in charge of the people's worship to maintain their connectivity or relationship with God. The [main part of the worship] in the Old Testament is the [offering of a lamb] or sheep or even goat which is done if the people will offer [thanksgiving] to God, or [ask for forgiveness] for their trespasses. This is the main "duty" or the priest which was later [done in the temple]. Later on, only the [high priest] was allowed to enter the holy of holiest inside the temple to [splash blood] which is part of their worship every celebration of their feast of the Pass Over. If the High priest in the Old Testament presides the offering of the lamb for their thanksgiving and for the forgiveness of their sins and splash blood in the holy of holiest in the temple, **Jesus did not offer lambs or sheep for the salvation of all but His own blood, His own life.** This is why John the Baptist called **[Jesus the Lamb]** when he said, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! ([John 1:29]). This is how **[Jesus]** performed His role **[as the High Priest.]** This is well elaborated in the Letter to the [Hebrews 14:14], "Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession" and in Hebrews [9: 11-14,] "But when [Christ came as high priest]... he entered once for all into the sanctuary, not with the blood of goats and calves but [with his own blood], thus obtaining eternal redemption. For if the blood of goats and bulls and the sprinkling of a heifer's ashes can sanctify those who are defiled so that their flesh is cleansed, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from dead works to worship the living God. This is also emphasized in [Hebrews 7:27] when it says" [He sacrificed for their sins] once for all **[when he offered himself]**. Jesus is the perfect mediator. He is not only the perfect priest, holy and sinless, but the perfect sacrifice. **B. The Church as Priestly, Prophetic and Kingly** In our past discussions, we have discussed [Jesus as the Sacrament of God] and the [Church as the Sacrament of Jesus]. (John 20:21) Jesus was the one who did the mission of God, and so the Church is the one whom He sent to do His mission. As mentioned in the above discussion, before the coming of Jesus, there were three instruments of God in the Old Testament whom he used to do the mission. These were the [prophets, the priests and the kings]. All the roles of the three (prophet, priest, and king) to do God's mission were all performed by Jesus in a very perfect way; done in accordance with the will of the Father who sent Him. These three ways of doing the mission is also the one which [Jesus passed on to the Church] who will continue it. So, [these] [three ways on how the Church would carry out her mission] all originated from Jesus Himself. The Three-fold ministry of the Church are: the mission of **[Sanctifying]**; to cleanse or make people holy ([priestly)], the mission of **Teaching/preaching** ([prophetic]), and the mission of **Ruling/leading /serving** ([kingly]). While these [**three ways of carrying out the mission is exercise fully by the college of bishops with the priest**] whom they are sharing the priestly ministry and also with the assistance of the **deacons** (by the **hierarchy**) through the power and authority bestowed upon them at their sacramental ordination, the [laity and all the faithful also share in these three-fold ministry] since by [virtue of our baptism], [all members of the faithful share in the triple mission of Christ] (LG 10-13,31). By virtue of our baptism, we have the so-called common priesthood of the faithful. To sum it up, the main function of a prophet is to preach God's words to people. [(**Prophet = preaching/teaching**).] The Priest's main function was to preside worship by praying and offering the lamb for thanksgiving and for the forgiveness of people's sins. This was done by J[esus] by offering himself as the [lamb for the forgiveness of our sins] [(**Priest = worship**)]. For the kingly function, Jesus demonstrated in the washing of the feet that a king should serve and not to be serve. So aside from leading/guiding the people, the king should also serve the people as clearly shown by Jesus. (**[King = Serve/lead]**/**rule/guide**) More specifically, [how do the hierarchy and the faithful exercise these three-fold ministry]? For the [priestly function], **the priests preside the worship through the celebration of the Sacraments centered on the Holy Eucharist** where we **offer the Body and Blood of Jesus for our sanctification (cleansing of our sins, making us holy).** So, we need to actively participate in our Holy Eucharist celebration and also the other Sacraments. The [prophetic ministry] is exercise by **celebrating the Word of God through the Liturgy of the Word** (readings (First reading, responsorial psalm, second reading, Gospel reading until the homily) **during our Holy Mass**. So, **[prophetic is preaching/teaching.]** Aside from preaching, we can also spread the values of the Kingdom by **[Witnessing]** which means we just live or put in action/show our faith and Christian values for others to emulate or be influenced. A prophetic role can also be done by [giving words or advice] that can [give life] to people or friends especially those are at the point of giving up on their difficult situations. The [kingly ministry] is being exercise by the hierarchy through [servant leadership] as perfectly exemplified by Jesus. The [hierarchy are offering their whole lives in serving God and people.] They [rule the people of God] through the [Gospel values] which is centered on [love]. Other ways of exercising the kingly ministry are [guiding] the people entrusted to them[, leading] them to live the Gospel values. Ordinary faithful are also to exercise their kingly mission by following the example of Jesus as the servant King who came to [serve others.] **Learning Task: As students, give specific examples/ways on how you can exercise the three-fold ministry of the Church.** (five points each = 15 points) Maximum of three lines for each answer. ------------------------ -- **Priestly Ministry** **Prophetic Ministry** **Kingly Ministry** ------------------------ -- **EVALUATION** **Instruction:** Identify what is being asked or described by the following statements below. \_\_\_\_\_1.
