    Study Notes

Jesus, the Prophet, King, and the High Priest

    • Jesus is the king who was willing to suffer and die for people to live and be totally liberated.
    • Jesus, King of kings, is a humble servant; power and authority mean love and service.
    • Jesus demonstrated this through washing the feet of his apostles, demonstrating humility and service. (John 13:1-17)
    • Jesus is the perfect high priest.
    • In the Old Testament, priests were responsible for the people's worship and maintaining their relationship with God.
    • The main part of worship in the Old Testament was the offering of a lamb, sheep, or goat, done for thanksgiving or seeking forgiveness.
    • This was typically done in the temple and only the high priest was allowed to enter the holy of holiest to splash blood which was part of their worship.
    • Jesus, however, offered his own blood, his own life, for the salvation of all.
    • John the Baptist, recognizing this great sacrifice, called Jesus "the Lamb" when he said, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!" (John 1:29)
    • Jesus fulfilled his role as high priest through his sacrifice.
    • This is further emphasized in the Letter to the Hebrews 14:14 and Hebrews 9:11-14.
    • Hebrews 7:27 states that Jesus sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself.
    • Jesus is the perfect mediator between God and humanity, fulfilling both the role of priest and sacrifice.

The Church as Priestly, Prophetic and Kingly

    • Jesus is the sacrament of God and the Church is the sacrament of Jesus, (John 20:21)
    • The Church is sent by Jesus to continue his mission, which was the mission God sent him, to perform.
    • Before Jesus's coming, there were three instruments of God in the Old Testament used to do mission work: prophets, priests and kings.
    • Jesus fulfilled all three roles perfectly.
    • Jesus passed on these three ways of doing the mission to the Church, and they are the three ways the Church continues its mission -Sanctifying, Teaching/preaching, and Ruling/leading/serving.
    • The three ways of carrying out the mission are exercised most fully by the college of bishops with the priests sharing the priestly ministry, and deacons (hierarchy) through the power and authority bestowed upon them at their sacramental ordination.
    • Laity and faithful also share in these three-fold ministries through the sacrament of baptism.
    • Through baptism, all members of the faithful share in the triple mission of Christ. (LG 10-13, 31)
    • Baptism gives us the common priesthood of the faithful
    • **Specific functions of each ministry
    • Prophet: To preach God's words to the people (preaching/teaching)
    • Priest: To preside over worship by praying and offering the lamb for thanksgiving and for forgiveness of sins. Jesus performed this function by offering himself as the lamb for the forgiveness of sins. (worship)
    • King: Jesus demonstrated through the washing of the feet that the king should serve and not be served. Leading and serving are key to the kingly function, as shown by Jesus. (Serve/lead/rule/guide)
    • How the hierarchy and faithful exercise the three-fold ministry:
      • Priestly: Priests preside over worship through the celebration of the sacraments, centered on the Holy Eucharist, where we offer the Body and Blood of Jesus for our sanctification (cleansing of sins, making us holy). ** We need to actively participate in our Holy Eucharist celebrations and also other sacraments.**
      • Prophetic: This ministry is exercised through celebrating the Word of God through the Liturgy of the Word (readings) during Holy Mass. This ministry is preaching/teaching.
      • Other ways to fulfill the prophetic ministry include witnessing (living out our faith and Christian values for others to emulate or be influenced), and giving words or advice that can give life to people, especially those who are at the point of giving up on their difficult situations.
      • Kingly: The kingly ministry is exercised through servant leadership as perfectly exemplified by Jesus. The hierarchy offers their whole lives in serving God and people. They rule the people of God through Gospel values which are centered on love.
      • Other ways of exercising the kingly ministry include guiding the people entrusted to them, leading them to live the Gospel values. Ordinary faithful are also to exercise their kingly mission by following the example of Jesus as the servant King who came to serve others.
