# SHS Student Handbook (About the School) ## History - 1595 - USC was founded in August 1 by Spanish Jesuit Missionaries. - 1595 - Formed what was later called **Colegio de San Ildefonso** in Cebu - 1595 - Located in Calle Enrile-Serrano for Spanish, Chinese, and Visayan boys - 1779 - Colegio de San Ildefonso was turned over to the diocese, issued by a Royal Decree by King Charles III of Spain, renamed to **Real Seminario de San Carlos**, named after St. Charles Borromeo - 1852 - Dominicans take over, renamed to **Seminario Conciliar de San Carlos** - 1867 - Seminario Conciliar de San Carlos was turned over to the Vincentian Fathers. - 1894 - Seminario-Colegio de San Carlos conferred the bachelor's degree to its first graduates, among them was Sergio Osmena, the later 4th President of the Republic of the Philippines. - 1911 - Formation of **Colegio de San Carlos (CSC)** under US colonial government - 1935 - April 1, placed under the administration of the **SVD (Societas Verbi Divini)**, offering College and Boys High School - 1941 - WW2 causes destruction of CSC buildings - 1945 - Colegio reopened in June by Fathers Joseph Jaschik and Ernest Hoerdemann - 1948 - The Colegio is granted university status, renamed to the **University of San Carlos (USC)** ## San Carlos Borromeo and SVD Saints - St. Charles Borromeo - USC Patron Saint - St. Arnold Janssen (1837-1909) - SVD Founder - St. Joseph Freinandanitz (1852-1908) - One of first two missionaries of the SVD sent outside of Germany in China ## Society of the Divine Word (SVD) - International order of Roman Catholic brothers, priests, and more than 6,000 members in 67 countries. The time when the apostles were "possessed by the holy spirit" and preached the word of God and doing miracles - Pentecostalism - "a form of Christianity that emphasizes the work of the Holy Spirit and the direct experience of the presence of God by the believer" (BBC) - Charismatic Renewal Movement (CRM) - international inclination of major Christian groups that holds similar beliefs to Pentecostalism, highlighting the spiritual gifts of the Holy Spirit - Catholic charismatic Renewal (CCR) - incorporates aspects of the beliefs and practices of the CRM while maintaining faithfulness of the Catholic Church - "charismatics" - those who claim to be possessed by the Holy Spirit and endowed with spiritual gifts ## Scriptural Background - Holy Spirit - has been around from before the beginning of time and has been made manifest throughout the history of our universe - Creation - the spirit breathed on the waters at the beginning of Creation and is responsible for the principle of life - Promise, Theopanies and the Law - the promise of God will ultimately be fulfilled by the Holy Spirit - Theopany - a manifestation of God, by the working of the Holy Spirit - Kingdom - The messiah would come and, in the end, bestow the Holy Spirit - John the Baptist - was "filled with the Holy Spirit" from his mother's womb, from which by his hand that Jesus was baptized after which the Holy Spirit descended in its manifest form - Our Blessed Mother - the Holy Spirit prepared Mary with a special preservative grace (Immaculate Conception), at the Annunciation, Mary conceived her Savior, and the Savior of the whole world, "by the power of the Holy Spirit" - Immaculate Conception - being born free from sin - Jesus - the "Anointed One", filled with and one with the Holy Spirit - Pentecost - the clearest manifestation of the Holy Spirit, where the disciples are given the strength to proclaim the Gospel - Church - at Pentecost, the Church is born, and continues to be active in the life of the Church ## Church Teachings - "To believe in the Holy Spirit means to worship him as God just like the Father and the Son." - Mike Landry ## Titles and Symbols of the Holy Spirit ### Holy Spirit: - Nicene Creed: - "Lord, the Giver of Life" - "who proceeds from the Father and the Son" - John's Gospel: - Paraclete ("he who is called to help") - Advocate, Helper, and Counselor ### Symbols of the Holy Spirit - Water - signifies the Holy Spirit's action in Baptism, and also the living water welling up from Christ as he was crucified, as its source and welling up in us to eternal life - Anointing - sacramental sign of Confirmation, called "christmation" in the Churches of the East, its full force can only be grasped only in relation to the primary anointing accomplished by the Holy Spirit, that of Jesus - Fire - While water signifies birth and the fruitfulness of life given by the Holy Spirit - Cloud and Light - occur togeather in the manifestation of the Holy Spirit, the cloud, now obscure, now luminous, reveals the living and saving God, while veiling the transcendence of his glory - The Seal - a symbol close to that of anointing, the seal (sphragis) indicates the indelible effect of the anointing with the Holy Spirit in the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Orders - The Hand - Jesus heals the sick and blesses little children by laying hands on them. - The Finger - "It is by the finger of God that [Jesus] cast out demons." - The Dove - At the end of the flood, symbolizing baptism, a dove was released by Noah, and returns with a fresh olive tree branch in its beak as a sign that earth was again habitable
