Identify and recognize the pertaining of a medical term 2. Define commonly used Prefixes pertaining to body structure Categories of Prefixes: depending on how they modify the root (part of the word which gives the basic meaning to the term): - Location, - Time, - Negation, - Amount, - Size - Position. Common Prefixes PREFIXES - PERTAINING TO LOCATION Above Outside Inside Around Below Inside Prefix intra- + Root abdomen, inside/within = inside the abdomen. Endo- Prefix = inside. Metro Root = uterus Endometritis= inflammation of the lining of the uterus. Muscular Venous Thecal inside/within Inside Em- and en-: prefixes = within or inside. Empyema = pus inside a body cavity. Outside Prefix extra+ Root abdomen, outside = outside the abdomen. - Extravascular - Extracellular - Extrapyramidal outside Ec- and ecto- are prefixes = outside. An ectopic pregnancy, = a pregnancy outside the uterine cavity. Around around/surrounding Peri- is a prefix =around or surrounding. Cardio is the root for heart. Pericarditis = inflammation around the heart. Behind Retro- and post-: prefixes = behind. Retrocardial =located behind the heart and behind postnasal = situated behind the nose. Under Under/ submarine The prefixes sub- and hypo = under. Subcutaneous = under the skin, Hypodermic needle = inserted under the skin. subarachnoid Above The prefixes supra- and hyper = Above. Supraspinous = above the spine, Hypertension = elevated BP. Between Inter- prefix = between. root, costal, = ribs. intercostal muscles = muscles between the ribs. Interrelation- intercommunication-interval PREFIXES - PERTAINING TO TIME The prefixes ante- & pre- mean before. By combining the prefix ante with the root partum, you know that antepartum means __________childbirth. A preoperative medication is a medication which is given _______ (before) surgery. Antenatal/ prenatal care premenstrual The prefix post- = after. Consequently, a postoperative complication = a complication which occurred (before, during, after) surgery.
