## Dynamic and Static IP Configurations (2 of 4) - A host is any device on a network that requests or serves up data or services to other devices - To communicate on a network or the Internet, a host needs: - Its own IP address - for example, 192.168.100.4 - A subnet mask - for example, 255.255.255.0 - The IP address of a default gateway, which is used to send data to other networks - The IP address of one or more DNS (Domain Name System) servers - The above information can be manually assigned to a computer's network connection - The computer's IP address would then be called a static IP address - This information can be requested from a server on the network (called a DHCP or Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol server) - IP address received is called a dynamic IP address
