# Getting to Know the macOS Desktop (2 of 16) The macOS Desktop is shown with different components outlined and labeled: - **Click for Apple menu:** The Apple menu is in the top left corner of the screen. - **Menu bar:** The menu bar is underneath the Apple menu. - **Status menu:** The status menu is located to the right of the menu bar, showing the time and date. - **Click to connect to Wi-Fi:** A button to connect to the internet is next to the status menu. - **Spotlight icon:** A magnifying glass icon is the search menu. - **Notification Center icon:** A bell icon indicates the notification center. - **App shortcut:** A small icon that can be used to quickly open an application, for example, the Finder. - **Finder window:** A Finder window is displayed on the desktop. - **Desktop:** The Desktop itself is the background, in this image, it is a picture of a forest. - **Launchpad icon:** This is an icon that can be used to quickly open and view all of your applications. - **Trash icon:** The Trash icon is where you can send files or folders to be deleted. - **Dock:** The Dock is a long bar located at the bottom of the screen and contains icons for commonly used applications, files, and folders. - **Finder icon:** This icon represents the Finder application. **Figure 10-2 The macOS desktop with a Finder window showing the Applications pane.**
