Blood Pressure Procedure/Script - “Hello, my name is Grace. I am going to be taking your blood pressure today. Blood pressure is measured to assess the force of blood against the walls of your arteries as your heart pumps. Is it alright if I touch your upper and lower arm?” Potential Q’s - When you measure blood pressure with your finger on the wrist, you feel the pulse only when the heart is pumping (systolic pressure). Once the pressure lowers (diastolic pressure), the pulse stops, and you can't feel it anymore. - Diastolic pressure is the pressure in your arteries when the heart is at rest, between beats, as it fills with blood Normal: 120 / 80 - Hypertension (stage 1): 140-159 / 90-99 - Hypertension (stage 2): 160 / 100 A few additional methods to improve hearing the systolic pressure: - Elevate the patient's arm for 15-20 seconds, then inflate the cuff while the arm is elevated. Lower the arm before releasing the cuff pressure - After inflating the cuff, have the patient open and close their fist rapidly ~8-20 times
