1 The Living Creation 1.1 THE STUDY OF LIFE 1.1 Objectives Define biology. Compare how naturalists and Christians view biology. Explain the need for a worldview in the study of biology. Summarize the six attributes of life. 1.1 Objectives Relate the six attributes of life to specific biological structures and functions. Identify the sources of energy and information for a living organism. ESSENTIAL QUESTION ? What makes something alive? biology the study of life worldview a way of seeing and interpreting all aspects of life that arises out of an overarching narrative and that shapes how a person thinks and acts Interpretation? An exposed cliff hundreds of meters tall contains many layers of sedimentary rock. Today we can see rivers depositing layers of sediment very slowly over many years. Therefore, the rocks in the cliff must be millions of years old. 1. Which parts of the statement are observable facts? ? 2. Which parts of the statement reflect a worldview-based interpretation? 3. Does this statement reflect a biblical or naturalistic worldview? Explain. Big Question 1 Where did life first come from? Creation Mandate Creation The Fall Redemption Creation Mandate What is the purpose of science in general and biology in particular? How can biology help us fulfill the Creation Mandate? Foundation for Biology Biology—the study of life—needs a foundation. God’s narrative clearly demonstrates that human life has value above all other life because we are made in His image. Science is a tool that can be used to exercise dominion and serve others. Science is not the source of ultimate truth. The Attributes of Life 1. Cells All living things are made of at least one cell. Every cell, tissue, and system in the body contains structure, a specific arrangement of parts. The Attributes of Life 2. Reproduction Cells come from preexisting cells; life comes from preexisting life. When a baby is conceived, two parent cells come together to form a new person. The Attributes of Life 3. Metabolism Metabolism is the sum of an organism’s chemical processes. It includes all the ways that an organism uses energy: for example, photosynthesis, respiration, growth, and movement. The Attributes of Life 4. Organization Organisms use energy and information to maintain order in their bodies. Without this kind of efficient organization your body would quickly fall apart. The Attributes of Life 5. Growth All growth involves the assembling of parts to make up an organism. Growth also includes replacing worn-out or damaged cells. The Attributes of Life 6. Response No organism can exist in a vacuum. Living things have the ability to adapt, or to change in response to the environment. The Attributes of Life An organism must possess all these characteristics in order to be considered alive. Cells Reproduction Big Question 2 How is life designed to function? The Attributes of Life Cells All living things have a Reproduction similar design, and this Metabolism common design points to a loving, all-wise Organization Designer. Growth Response Big Question 3 How does God provide energy for life? Energy Food Sun Information DNA or RNA molecules Just 1 g of DNA can store roughly 455 exabytes of data—that’s 455 billion gigabytes of information! ESSENTIAL QUESTION What makes something alive? ? Something can be considered alive if it possesses all six of the attributes of life.
