Write what you think is happening in the image. UNDERSTANDING BIASES AND PREJUDICES B i a s - is a tendency to look at things in a certain way, in preference to another. It means to favor or support a particular one person, group, thing, or point of view over another resulting in unfairness. UNDERSTANDING BIASES AND PREJUDICES Nature of Biases Bias can influence how someone interprets information, makes judgments, or behaves toward others. It may or may not result in harmful actions, but it can influence how we perceive reality. Examples Situation A hiring manager consistently prefers candidates from a s p e c i fi c u n i v e r s i t y, b e l i e v i n g t h a t g r a d u a t e s f r o m t h a t s c h o o l a r e m o r e q u a l i fi e d , e v e n i f other candidates have equivalent skills and experience. Some of the most common types of bias are: 1. Anchoring Bias: This happens when people are too relied on the first piece of information “the anchor”. Example: You are buying a shirt, you first saw a branded Uniqlo worth 599 pesos, then saw a similar shirt from shopee worth 299 pesos. Some of the most common types of bias are: 2. Confirmation. This happens when one tends to search for, interpret, favor and remember information supporting one’s existing belief and views. “confirming the initial belief regardless” Some of the most common types of bias are: Example: A researcher strongly believes that a new drug will cure a disease. As they analyze the data, they pay more attention to data that supports their hypothesis and ignore or downplay data that contradicts it. Some of the most common types of bias are: 3. Media Bias This happens when the journalists and news producers in the mass media select what to report and cover. Example: As a witness to the incident, I can attest that the reported news is far from what I see because the events are reversed and untrue. Common Types of Biases: A-C-M Prejudice Prejudice means “pre-judging”. It refers to preconceived opinions or judgments about individuals or groups based on stereotyping people according to their race, ethnicity, gender, religion, etc. Prejudices are negative and discriminatory, involving unfavorable assumptions about people or groups before knowing them personally. EXAMPLE  Muslim women are illiterate and uneducated.  Men with tattoos are definitely drug addicts. The most comm on types of prejudice include: 1. Racism. This is the idea that groups of people exhibit different personality characteristics and can be separated based on the dominance of one race over another. Example: All Chinese in the country are considered virus carriers due to the COVID-19 disease. The most comm on types of prejudice include: 2. Sexism This is a prejudice based on sex or gender. Example: Women are considered weak and lack the strength and ability to do the work of men. The most comm on types of prejudice include: 3. Classism. This is a prejudice based on social class or grouping of individuals based on wealth, occupation, income, education, and social network. Example: The poor are uneducated and do not help our country; they should not be treated well by the government. The most comm on types of prejudice include: 4. Ageism.This is a prejudicial attitude towards older people, old age, and the aging process. Example: All adults should not be hired because they only become a burden, especially those who deserve to retire. The most comm on types of prejudice include: 5. Religion. This is the attitude towards a person or group differently because of the particular beliefs about religion. Example: He lost his job because of his religion, which was believed to conflict with his employer.
